Severe weather update
Posted 7 February 2011 - 12:59pm
start of main content

Due to high winds, a number of emergency road closures have been implemented for public safety reasons. Locations confirmed so far include:

Grange Road West, Birkenhead between Eastbourne Road and Exmouth Street

Shore Road, Birkenhead between Hamilton Street and Woodside Business Park access

Park Road East, Birkenhead between Conway Street and Claughton Road

The strong winds appear to be causing some damage to trees and buildings across Wirral. Building Control Officers and other structural / building and highways staff are out assessing reported damage.

We are working with the emergency services to temporarily close roads and areas where the risk of flying debris is greatest.

The ferries are all suspended until further notice too as it's far too rough.

Looking out of my window and the waves are fantastic! If I was steadier on my feet I'd go and take a few pics - I might try in a little while think

My main concern is losing my walking stick as it was my Dads. Not too worried about falling over raftl I just love the power of the waves and nature - makes you realise that in the great scheme of things, you're really not in control smile

Not too worried about the roof tiles - you both know where I live so it's not that big a stroll to the front and there's only a few houses to go past.

You won't be saying that when you've hurt yourself and are screaming in pain again
Stay where you are - you know it makes sense wink

I'm going to use one of the crutches instead of my stick. The lure of the waves is getting too much. Just looked at the little boat that's moored and it keeps disappearing under the waves - thought it was sinking at first. A big ship has just gone out and even that's struggling.

At lunchtime, I tried to take a video of one of the three graces at the Pierhead with my mobi - the structure is covered in tarpaulin and scaffolding. However, I couldn't hold my mobi because it was like a wind tunnel there, and then I realised that I was having difficulty standing up, so had to shelter in a nearby doorway!

The Mersey, on the other hand, seemed relatively calm, considering.
