Government gives go-ahead for new academy in Wirral

THE Government approved plans to create an academy in Wirral merging two schools from Birkenhead.

Opening in January the University Academy will comprise around 1,100 pupils from Rock Ferry High and Park High.

The academy’s specialisms will be “Applied Learning, Sport and Performance” and pupils will receive a free school uniform.

Academy Principal Steve McMahon said: “We will have consistently high expectations and we will challenge and support every student to become the very best they can be by developing their self-belief, raising their aspirations and supporting them to achieve their full potential.”

The Academy will initially occupy the former Park High site – known as the North Campus – and the former Rock Ferry site will be known as the South Campus.

Students will continue with their current timetables and exam courses on their current sites.

In September 2011, the Academy will come together on the North Campus – the former Park High site – and extra bus-services will be provided to enable students to travel to and from school. Students currently in Year 10 in both schools will continue with their GCSE and other exam courses under protected timetables.

All students will take part in a special transition programme.

My son goes to Park High doing his final year and the academy has been stalled, he was supposed to get his new uniforms but they decided to hold out a little longer until later on in the year although the name of the school has been changed to "Birkenhead Academy: North Campus"

“Applied Learning, Sport and Performance”
What a load of meaningless tosh: and why is it that every educational establishment these days seems to tack "University" onto the title?
Oh, of course, the free uniform will improve their achievement no end. RANT RANT RANT
