Wirral council's free parking to boost local shops - 29th Nov 2010 1:46pm
Shoppers can park free of charge in some Wirral car parks in the run-up to Christmas, the council has said.
Authority-run car parks in Birkenhead, Heswall, West Kirby and Liscard will be free after 1500 GMT every Thursday up to Christmas.
Parking will also be free on Saturday mornings in Heswall and West Kirby on 4 December, Liscard on 11 December and Birkenhead on 18 December.
Wirral Council said it wanted to encourage people to shop locally.
Lesley Rennie, cabinet member for transport, said: "I want to make sure that we do all we can to help people who are feeling the pinch at this time of year and also to support our small traders.
"Many of our small shops are trying their best to compete with the growth in online shopping and out-of-town stores.
"This Christmas, we are making sure there has never been a better time to shop local."
