Five Merseyside men arrested over 10 million smuggled cigarettes
FIVE Merseyside men were arrested over a haul of 10 million smuggled cigarettes.
The suspects, all from Wallasey, were arrested after a swoop by officers from HM Customs and Revenue on an Ellesmere Port warehouse on Monday.
They were later bailed.
The cigarettes, with a duty value of around £1.8m, were imported into the UK from Dubai via Holland.
Mike O’Grady, from HMRC, said: “This operation resulted in the seizure of millions of illicit cigarettes in all likelihood eventually destined for Cheshire and Merseyside.”
The cigarettes will now be recycled to provide power for the National Grid.
