A WOMAN was fighting for her life today after being found in the street with massive head injuries.

The 49-year-old, who has not yet been named, was found by two people walking down The Meadow, at its junction with Greenwood Road, Woodchurch, Wirral, at around 11.20pm on Monday.

An ambulance was called and she was taken to Arrowe Park hospital where she was rushed into emergency surgery. Police today said her condition was “critical”.

Detectives say they do not yet know how the woman came to be injured, but today had a 30-year-old local man in custody on suspicion of assault. He was picked up several hours after the woman was found and was questioned yesterday.

Det Insp Mark Tivendale, from Birkenhead CID, said they wanted to speak to people who were in Greenwood Road around the time the woman was found unconscious.

They know several people, men and women in their 20s, were out in the road but they had gone by the time the emergency services arrived.

They also want to trace a couple seen walking in the area as they try to shed some light on what happened.

Resident Jake New, 18, who only moved into a flat on Greenwood Road on Monday morning described hearing a man and woman screaming overnight.

He said: “A man and a woman were literally screaming at each other outside my bedroom window.”

A resident, who would not be named, said she heard a woman who sounded “distressed”.

DI Tivendale said: “We need to understand how this woman came to be so seriously injured and trace several people we believe were in the area at the time. I would urge these people to come forward and tell us what they know. We believe there may have been some kind of incident in the street involving several people which could be linked to this woman and her injuries.

“I would appeal to anyone who heard or saw anything untoward to call us.”

"I would appeal to anyone who heard or saw anything untoward to call Birkenhead CID on 0151 777 2273 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

THE GLOBE
Anybody heard anything else about this?
I heard about it very sad i used to know somebody who lived round there
Very sad. RIP.
It was her son who was arrested.
This is bad....real bad. Her son? fooking 'ell!!
Yep my friends found her she was sitting up in the road singing with a big gash in her head, he said it was really errie! Her son is supposed to of hit her over head with a plank of wood then kicked her when she was on the ground, how the hell could you do that to your mother! This world is bollox'd!
If the son has been released on police bail, then I don't think he could be a murder suspect.
I know that bit doesn't add up thats why i put the 'supposed to' in. The people who found her said she looked like she had been given a good hiding, but maybe she fell as she was drunk? Well thats up for the police to find out now.
I used to live on the Woodchurch, this doesn't surprise me. There's some very 'basic' people living there.

Wirral woman’s death not treated as murder

THE death of a woman found in a Wirral street is not being treated as murder.

Julie Keelan, 49, was found unconscious lying in the road in The Meadow, close to its junction with Greenwood Road, in Woodchurch, at around 11.20pm on Monday.

Police are now trying to work out if she fell, rather than being attacked.

She was discovered by two men who were walking their dogs and raised the alarm.

Thought to be a mum-of-one Miss Keelan died on Wednesday afternoon at Arrowe Park Hospital.

A Home Office post-mortem carried out on Wednesday recorded the cause of death as “serious head injuries”.

Police initially thought Miss Keelan, from Birkenhead, may have been assaulted and arrested a 28-year-old man who they questioned for two days as she fought for life.

He was then bailed.

But they still want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time Miss Keelan was found.

Anyone with information should call police in Wirral on 0151 777 2273.
