Billboard prank in Liverpool and Wirral makes a fool of everyone
A SPOOF marketing campaign claiming Wirral wants to be “Scouse free” fooled a number of ECHO readers.
The elaborate April Fool’s prank saw eight billboard posters go up around the city centre and near the Wirral entrance to the Kingsway Tunnel.
It claimed that “Wirral Fights Back” and was looking to ban Scousers from the peninsula.
The billboard even boasted a website www.scousefreewirral.com where the leader of a fake political party put across his views.
Some ECHO readers rang in to voice their distaste at the posters.
A spokesman for primesight, the company which owns the advertising boards, confirmed the boards were an April Fool and the company had sought legal advice before allowing the boards to go up.
The ECHO got in touch with the mastermind behind the scheme who confirmed the posters were a joke and they hadn’t been intended to create ill feeling or upset.
A spokesman for the company behind the spoof said: “April Fools Day was a nice opportunity to make a mockery of the current political state in the UK.
“It was a great tongue-in-cheek way to launch an amazing comeback for one of Liverpool’s favourite events. All will be revealed soon and it’s worth waiting for.”
The ECHO also carried an April Fool on Page 3 yesterday claiming the Liver Building was going to be moved brick by brick to New York’s Liberty Island. It was taken in good humour by everyone – and was our most popular story online yesterday.
