oshocked Anyone see in the paper tonight? The workers have noticed asbestos in the rubble that they are using. So work has stopped (did it ever get going properly, its been getting worked on for years!) The rubble was bought over in a truck from the back of a building that has just been demolished in Liverpool! Ha, take it all back! oshocked

It can kill you if you breathe enough of it in.

The issue is not "enough of it". Asbestos related health problems can develop as a result of a single exposure to a fibre of the "wrong" type ie shape and size, such that the fibre gets trapped in the lungs. Of course, the more asbestos there is the greater the chance that there will be some fibres of the "wrong" type. Not all asbestos contains these harmful fibres but there is unlikely to be any guarantee for older asbestos used in building or lagging so ALL asbestos should be treated with care. If asbestos-containing material is undisturbed and contained eg over-painted, then the hazard is minimal.

Wonder sometimes if I am sitting on an asbestos time bomb myself. All the ships used to have asbestos lagging around the pipes. On one of the destroyers I was on we used to sit in the for'd mess when the bow 4.5s opened up and you could see the little bits of asbestos dust floating in the sunlight that streamed through the scuttles (portholes to uninitiated), and very pretty they were too. Must admit that I have not heard of any of my erstwhile messmates going down with anything related to asbestiosis so maybe we were just lucky.

At times in lairds it was like walking through a snow storm, with the stuff, its a case of some suffer some don't. Now we know what it does it's important to be careful, If I've got it, they might have trouble cremating me. wink

So it can lead to very harmful side effects, so should be treated with care. Theres a big compo claim going on somewhere isnt there? Is it something to do with the 2nd world war?

Just hope it doesnt blow over to the other side of the road where loads of people cycle, walk dogs etc.

Only time will tell, my aunty has just been diagnosed with asbestosis at the age of 88. They reckon she got it through washing my uncles work stuff in the 60's.
