Ellesmere Port drivers to receive free wheel locks to stop arson

MOTORISTS will be given wheel locks as part of a crackdown on car fires.

Cheshire fire service will distribute the kit to drivers in Ellesmere Port whose vehicles are thought to be at particular risk of being stolen and burned out.

Older cars are not fitted with modern security systems, meaning they are easier to break into and take away.

Ellesmere Port fire station manager Sarah Allen said: “Last year, we attended almost 150 vehicle fires, most of them deliberate.

“It cost the service, and therefore the taxpayer, many thousands of pounds and put the lives of firefighters and members of the public at significant risk.”

The scheme was jointly funded by the fire service and Cheshire police.

To arrange a home safety assessment, please call the fire service on 0800 389 0053.
