New sculptures at Birkenhead Park Station

THREE new sculptures have been unveiled at Birkenhead Park Station.

The sculptures - each more than five metres tall - are intended to brighten commuters’ journeys.

They were designed by local artist Stephen Hitchen for Merseytravel as part of its public art programme.

The sculptures reference landmarks in Birkenhead, Merseyside and beyond.

Mr Hitchen said: “One sculpture recognises the significance of Birkenhead Park as the first municipal park in the world and a reference for Central Park in New York City.”

Merseytravel chairman Cllr Mark Dowd said: “They are fascinating. I am sure they will bring great pleasure to commuters. You see something new in them every time.”

The sculptures were made in steel with the designs cut using lasers.
