Birkenhead tunnel will be closed during bike ride on Sunday

THE Queensway Tunnel in Birkenhead will be closed to traffic this Sunday, July 5, for a bike ride.

More than 2,200 cyclists from across the country are expected to take part in The Liverpool Chester Liverpool Bike Ride, one of the country's biggest annual mass participation events.

Sponsored by Liverpool Primary Care Trust and Merseytravel, it offers cyclists a choice of four rides: 20, 25, 54 and 90 miles.

Because of the numbers taking part, The Queensway Tunnel will be closed for most of the day to allow cyclists to ride through the tunnel traffic-free.

The Kingsway Tunnel in Wallasey will remain open to motorists throughout the event.

A six-mile ride called The Chester Family Fun Ride will also be taking place at the same time.

As the name implies, it's aimed at families wanting a gentle introduction to an organised cycling event.

Pre-entry has now closed but people can still take part in any of the five rides by entering on the day for an additional £2 admin charge.

A mini cycle show take place at the finish. Full ride participant support services, refreshments, and a free t-shirt are provided for those taking part.
