High-tech method of spreading Respect

Wirral’s fight against anti-social behaviour is making the most of technology to deliver key messages to the public.

Wirral Anti-Social Behaviour Team is this week launching its use of Bluetooth "proximity marketing" to keep the public up-to-date with efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Caroline Laing, manager of Wirral Anti-Social Behaviour Team, explained how the system works: "Bluetooth technology allows us to send animated messages and information to mobile telephones within a particular radius.

"When members of my team and our partners are working in an area we can send important information to members of the public.

"People can choose to accept or reject a message so it is not forced upon anyone.

"We see particular value in its use with young people and will use the technology when our Youth Respect Team is in an area where positive activities are available for young people to participate in.”

Over time the technology will be used for social marketing purposes delivering information about anti-social behaviour related issues such as alcohol misuse.

Councillor George Davies, cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "It is important that the public has confidence in agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour and this is an strong tool to not only provide the public with information, but reassure them that agencies are working together to deal effectively with issues that are raised.”
