Gangmaster Michael Nevin jailed for 10 years

A MILLIONAIRE gangmaster who housed and employed illegal immigrants on Merseyside was jailed for 10 years after refusing to pay back his ill-gotten gains.

Michael Nevin, 38, was sent down after failing to hand over £1.4m.

Nevin was arrested after a police investigation found 25 illegal immigrants from former Eastern European countries living in rooms in two Southport houses in 2004.

In February 2006, he was convicted of 25 immigration offences and jailed for 12 months.

At that time, Liverpool crown court heard he was making hundreds of pounds a week from rent from the men, who worked in the local food processing industry and agriculture.

They earned minimum wages in jobs provided by a recruitment agency with which Nevin had connections

A year later, police used the Proceeds of Crime Act to tot-up Nevin’s assets and traced £7m he had made over six years through five different companies.

Judge Mark Brown found he had realisable assets of £1.4m in bank accounts and houses and ordered Nevin pay the money back within six months or he would be returned to jail.

Nevin challenged the order and the case went to London’s Court of Appeal but it was thrown out.

When he appeared in Liverpool, he asked for an adjournment to contest the decision.

But District Judge Trevor Chatelier refused and when Nevin said he would not pay, he was jailed.

wow, why not pay it?
He qwould of still been quids in confused
If he's pleading not guilty then he can't pay it - it would be admitting he was guilty

Why? It's the same as you getting a speeding ticket when you don't think you were speeding, but you pay up anyway because it's the easiest/cheapest option.
