just had a phone call of scott that the comet inn pub on laird st (i think)
is up in flames.. there is three fire engines and the major support unit is there to.
no way!!!
i'd go take a look but i've had a bottle of beer
shockin'
another ancient pub bites the dust!
Lucky we got the pictures up first
Clicky
he is getting photos to....
such a shame - its scruffy but its always been a landmark
i live not far from there can't see any smoke
Some one said it was the north star not the comet ??
Wish I wasn't so unbelievably tired otherwise I'd go down.
took these not very good.
out by the time i got there spoke to fireman he said it was quite big fire but had it under control in no time took 3 engines 2 hydrant's said OK for me to take photos..
they could have waited a few weeks - if it only closed yesterday - how dense is that???
closed comet down.. opened the star? same customers
Another local pub bites the dust - I noticed on Friday that the Queen's in Oxton has also closed down, 2 of the 3 pubs on Beechwood have gone in the last few weeks and are there any left of the 5 pubs that there used to be near Green Lane station?
There are obviously many reasons:
- the recession
- smoking ban (both smokers not bothering and the cost of implementation)
- supermarket booze being cheaper
- opening of many more bars in town and city centres taking trade away
- a change in the social habits of the British population - 30 years ago many of our fathers would of gone for a pint in the local during the week - how many of us do now?
The question is, is this a bad thing that should be addressed ir just a natural evolution of British society - discuss!
Didn't realise the Queens Hotel in Oxton had closed. That is really bad news. My favourite watering hole when I lived in B'head.
Geez. Things are getting bad.

It is sad that a certain way of life may be fading away - you mentioned dads going out for one or two at the local. My dad used to do this but in the end it was the way the pub changed I think that put him off (this is going back about 10-15 years. The pub was The Avenue (which his father had helped build when the cinema was cleared and the pub was built). It had a refit some time ago where I think it lost its soul. I am not sure if they have it back or will ever manage it.
They used to hold darts tournaments in there, which my grandad and dad used to win frequently. That is possibly what's missing - the dart board! I suppose the HSE has probably banned them now

Yes, the old house at home and the crooked billet are still open.
I haven't been to a pub for over a year, the last time I went was the Brown Cow. It was full of wideboy chavs, it took 1/4 of an hour to get served by the two bar staff (who were only serving their chav mates) and some [censored] 'dj' was playing the shittest music at full volume. And then all my mate's were talking about football. Haven't been out since

That sounds like a small corner of hell Station!
Here is a video. There weren't any flames visible. Just smoke. This was about 10 minutes after the fire service arrived.

hello iris
Oh yeah - sorry I only knew about 3 on the Beechwood.
Personally, I still do frequent pubs but only really at the weekend and very occasionally for a pub quiz. It must be 10 years since I "popped out for pint".
Station - if you want a proper pub try the Travellers rest or the Shrew (which itself flirted with disaster last year!)
No worries AR ONE so meny pubs shutting these days some good pubs around at one time S**T NOW?
There must be 2 Seven Stiles pubs then because it is still boarded up and not open.
The Seven Stiles at 8.30 this morning, definitely not boarded up:

Guys - I am soooooo sorry.
I've seen the blocked up bit on the side and that's it.
Note to everyone - keep well on the pavement when I'm driving along there. If I can't see a boarded up pub then you guys don't stand a chance
