I don't know if anyone found a way round the wirral this morning but it was just total gridlock everywhere I went.

A540 (Chester High Road) blocked Southbound from Gayton to past two mills.
A41 both directions blocked
M53 Closed
Arrowe Park area - couldn't get near.

There have been warnings about drainage problems on the M53 before, one pipe burst blocks both directions and blocks the drains.

What happened with the tunnels, how were they?
Tell me about it! I left home this mornig at 6.50 and got to Warrington at 9.20.

Motorists are facing disruption in Cheshire after part of a motorway was closed because pools of water from a burst pipe froze on the surface.

The M53 was closed in both directions between junction five and seven after police said conditions were "too dangerous" for drivers.

Cheshire Constabulary advised motorists to avoid the area and said there were potential delays in traffic.

Diversions have been put in place while engineers investigate the leak.

Standing water

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: "We are advising motorists that there could be potential delays in traffic this morning and to plan extra time for their journeys."

The spokeswoman said pools of standing water had turned to ice across the motorway.

Temperatures in the region fell to about -5C overnight.

"The conditions are too dangerous for drivers and whilst the burst water main is being investigated and dealt with by utility companies the motorway has been closed," the spokeswoman added

"Diversions have been put in place. If you can avoid the area between junction 5 and 7 we are asking drivers to do so."

If motorists cannot avoid the area, the spokeswoman advised them to delay their journeys.

That is a bit understated - it was one foot deep and covering both directions - pools, more like a lake!!!

15 cars away from junction 5 southbound and heading for Vauxhalls and they shut the motorway completly 6.50am! Took me an hour through the Port to get to work and every road was crawling with the weight of traffic.

Sounds about right PhilH. I must have been about 15 mins behind you. Took me 2 hours to get back onto M53 at J8.

Thanks for piccy biscansplums, I passed there at about 7:50 and the traffic was up to the bridge you can see (buzz FM had given a vague warning so I was on the lookout), so I gave the Motorway a miss, I got to eastham by about 8:10 and by then the radio was saying it was backed up to woodchurch, then I got stuck.
