I went past on my way to college at about 5:15 - 5:20 and the flames were jumping quite high with a large plume of black smoke. No sign of the fire brigade or janitor's at that point and the road was still open.

It was suspected to have been started deliberately, probably by kids who might have been the same kids that terrorised stranded passengers at Birkenhead North train station, throwing bricks at them as their trains were cancelled due to the black smoke from the fire.
