Isn't it part of the waterfront redevelopment by peel holdings?

maybe peel holdings didn't give a big enough offer for it?

This is the usual trait of buildings on the Wirral. They lay vacant for months whilst deteriorating whilst the Council do bugger all...then...all of a sudden the building catches fire and has to be demolished..

...and up pops posh flats that are built on the former ground.

Surprised Liscard Hall, Central Park, hasn't gone up in smoke...yet.

Posted By: Spritey_Nikki Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 10th Jun 2008 10:53am
Liscard Hall i believe has had fires in it though....

and yes i agree they do lay vacant for months, however i dont think its down to the council that these buildings are going up in smoke.....

i think that hotel was just due to be reburbished...what i think is....the owners were told to renovate it or it would be demolished (which meant owners lost money)...so the owners have took it upon themselves to do an inside job in setting it a blaze (bear in mind the heatspots were on all 3 floors..so someone went through the entire hotel and set each floor a light) so they could claim on insurance to get the place renovated...bingo everyone wins....
Posted By: xX_Jennie_Xx Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 10th Jun 2008 1:57pm
lol ok wise one .... haha ur peoberbly rite thou .... but dus everyone win if they find out its an insurance job there fooked.
Posted By: AR_One Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 10th Jun 2008 2:20pm
Sadly it happens all the time - developers regularly leave buildings in a insecure state if they can't get permission to demolish them - oh dear someone has set fire to it and it has to demolished.

Most of the old warehouses on the quayside in Newcastle went this way, the King Eddy pub by the pier head in Liverpool was another one.

My patent solution - the owner of a building has a duty of care to preserve it - buildings left vacant, insecure and available to damage can be taken off the owners by the council and used to benefit the communitity. If that was implemented you'd massively see the rate of this sort of fire and vandalism drop!
Posted By: Spritey_Nikki Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 10th Jun 2008 3:17pm
yes, but although you would see vandilism drop and maybe drop the numbers in this sort of fire....

Would the council really pull their weight enough to keep areas and buldings the way they should be??

Personally I dont trust them enough, do you??

but...the Council then give the go ahead for planning permission straight away to local contractors then to build new houses / apartments but delays for months if it simply wanted to add a conservatory! The Council simply just sit back and wait...and wait for the building to simply become "unsafe". It's how most councils get round demolishing listed buildings.

The WBC just want to see more houses / flats built so that they can rake in more cash in council taxes! Down with the Coucil...well down with it!!
Posted By: Spritey_Nikki Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 10th Jun 2008 3:29pm
well to be honest its our whole government that want to rake in the money, not jus councils....but yeh good point, they do wait for them to be 'unsafe'....

but in some cases, it istn down to the council, as most derelict buildings do have owners.....which means its the owners that have took it upon themselves to do an insurance scam....

Fire crews fight blaze at Woodside Hotel in Birkenhead
Aug 13 2008

Blaze at Woodside Hotel, Birkenhead

FIRE crews were battling a blaze at the empty Woodside Hotel in Birkenhead this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at 1.40pm.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue service said: "The first floor is well alight and there will be substantial damage".

In June tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused in a fire at the hotel which was being treated as suspicious.

The site is a key element in a proposed multi-million pound regeneration of the Wirral waterfront area.

Well if its THAT unsafe and structurally unsound, how come it is being a pig to demolish!!
My mates company is doing the demo, Total Demolition Services, and he was telling me they have had to bring in the BIG 30 tonne machine to do it. They were meant to do it by hand and powertools as it is close to the road, but they wernt effective enough!
Some structural surveyor eh? Kerching £££££££££ Council!!!! somad

I was shocked to know that they own the Port of Liverpool!!! I know this may have been common knowledge but was not to me.

So who's for a massive shopping mall on Bidston Moss? Don't believe me?

"A new 571,000 sq ft Retail and Leisure Quarter at Bidston Moss.
The first of its type in the UK to feature classical architecture, bringing a more pleasant feel than traditional retail parks.
The new retail and leisure quarter will build on the success of existing retail facilities that already surrounds Bidston Moss and introduce pedestrian and cycle routes making the new facilities accessible to all.
A new hotel, foodstore, health and fitness facility and homestore will be built, along with new shops, bars and restaurants that together will bring a much needed evening economy to the area, making it a vibrant place to be, day or night."

My friend's son works as a driver for a haulage firm not far from here. He's been doing the same job for yonks. A big transport firm but most folk have been there for years. (No names-no pack drill). All going along smoothly - even considering the downturn in business of late. All well that is until those hated f***wits PEEL HOLDINGS took the firm over !

In comes a little t**t with MBA quals. and tickets up to his rectum - but no knowledge of the haulage industry. All sorts of vicious conditions laid out (no if's & but's) You WILL do XYZ or you are OUT !

Previously, drivers had gone that extra mile to ensure the customers were happy. No longer. Bare minimum done to comply and not an gnat's crotchet over the legal hours worked.

Oh - just remembered. What was the outfit who evicted the historic warships out of B'head docks ? .....PEEL HOLDINGS of course, so they can charge megabucks for their new trendy dockside apartments ! Can't have the docks cluttered up with SHIPS !!!!

Excuse me.... I'm going to throw up !!

Who is Mrs Murphy?

Posted By: Anonymous Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 27th Sep 2008 8:25pm
Mrs Murphy was a simple working woman who was boiling up a big cauldron of Chowdah to feed her loving hubby when he came home from a hard day at the sewage works. While her back was turned, some nasty bas***d lobbed his overall's into the pot.

Sorry, got to go - the cat's expecting a headache!

where have I been not to have heard this tale of treachory?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 27th Sep 2008 8:46pm
Mmmm.. and the original thread here was .....? Sorry going very OT.

Seriously.. (ho.bloody ho) Many moons ago I used to work on the lighthouses. On one station was a guy who was from Fazackerley. Just known as Black Jack (rarely washed). He would in the evening, put his feet up on the Aga stove. He would puff away on his pipe (with some evil baccy mixture in it) staring silently at the ceiling for ages. After a while, he would come out with " Mmmmmmmmmm...the thing is .............. who put the overalls in Mrs Murphy's Chowdah ?" This simple, but crazy question was guaranteed to have the 3 (always 3 keepers on the offshore lights) of us convulsed. Black Jack has probably popped his clogs by now as he was quite a bit older than me.

It's a phrase that just stuck with me over the years. I think most of my bent sense of humour was picked up on my years on the lights.

Anyway.... what the hell are you doing in on a Saturday night ??

Posted By: MissGuided Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 27th Sep 2008 9:06pm
I am deeply grateful to be conversing with a soul who used to man lighthouses - what an immense thing this is (not the gin talking). Really it is amazing, because they decided that so many lighthouses could be automated. I was down at Trwyn Du (Black Point) on Anglesey a few weeks ago and I was amazed by the thing. It rings a bell every 30 seconds and flashes a light too, because if you try to pass between the mainland and Puffin Island you are shafted!

I'd quite like the job of a lighthouse keeper - no ASBO neighbours for starters!!

You know why they had 3 keepers don't you?
Smalls Lighthouse
"The Smalls is one of the most remote offshore lighthouses in the UK and home to extraordinary stories. The first message in bottle was sent from here and an incident here involving two lighthouse keepers brought about a change in the way lighthouses were run forever.

The couple, Howell and Griffith, were quarrelsome and when Howell unexpectedly died one night, this left Griffith with the worry that he would be blamed for the death. He made a coffin and lashed the body to the outside of the lighthouse but storms picked up and no help was able to come to them for some weeks by which time Griffith had gone mad - making the lighthouse authority decide that there should always be three men stationed on lighthouses from then on in.

The lighthouse is managed by Trinity Lighthouse, and cannot be visited"

I'd love to live in a Lighthouse. It's a shame they automated them - just not the same in my eyes.

That's a great bit of information Suzy - looks like something else for me to investigate tomorrow thumbsup I wonder how many are actually still manned now.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Burned Down - Woodside Hotel - 27th Sep 2008 9:16pm
Spot on ! Yes, the Smalls was one of the best lights to be on - as long as you were on with a good crew. Was on most of the north/west wales lights. Trwyn Du has always been unmanned (as far as I know). Light and bell worked by acetylene gas. Used to have "No passage landward" painted on the sides.

Don't get me started on the lighthouse stories. I'll be up all night and you'll be ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

I think we had better pull the plug on this one now or the mods will be saying naughty things about going off topic. Worthy of General Chat tomorrow maybe ??? Someone gave me a bottle of Arran Single Malt yesterday, so I'm going to test some of it now and depress myself with reading today's papers !

Signing off.
