Kwik Save said it was closing 79 shops - more than a third of its UK stores - in order to survive.

Shop workers union Usdaw said the news would affect many of its members.

Speculation has suggested Kwik Save is facing a cash crisis, despite getting a £50m rescue package in February.

I still to this very day never understand why the competition's comission had to step in and force Somerfield to sell off some of the Kwik Save stores that it purchased a few years ago, and yet they let the likes of Tesco buy everything in sight.

This was the death nail of the remaing Kwik Save stores and the brand itself.

All the stores that Somerfield were allowed to keep are in general doing quite well in comparison to the ones they were forced to get rid of.

Used to shop a the Kwickie, but since I started driving, Tescos is a lot cheaper and there is a greater range of products available.
