I am posting this at steds request. He says he has a problem with his car that when he starts driving, he has no power in 1st or 2nd gear but as soon as he shifts to third, the car is fine as normal. Any ideas?

Need more details. Has he recently fitted/removed anything? Is this problem constant or just when hot/cold?
Posted By: maverick Re: Steds problem - 19th Apr 2005 11:15pm
Could be the clutch, As i think there is more touque in first and second. Only a guess thou.

If its clutch would it not smell ??
Posted By: Dazza Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 12:01am
Also the bite would be high and why in 3rd gear? surley 2nd would be ok since its not a stopstart

his car does have a very strange smell of eggs every now and again, but net thought that was his battery, apparently his battery smells like that when its on its way out.

From what I gathered, the problem is constant, and he has not removed or fitted anything.

smell of eggs tends to point towards the CAT (catalytic convertor)
Posted By: scoop Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 6:59am
How many dying batteries do u get to smell stedmeister? Sounds like ur CAT but i didnt think it affected performance that much,
It sounds a bit like what a dying clutch does. one way to test it is to try and wheelspin. If the revs stay hish and the car slowly pulls away the clutch is worn, also try rolling along at about 15mph in second then flooring it, if there is a rise in revs-then a slow rise in speed the clutch slipped with the shock of the power, try to take it easy and get it into a garage for a mechanic to look at it, im sure you will get a free quote for a new clutch/cat. Whatever is at fault

Blocked fuel filter confused ?

The fuel supply is much greater in the lower gears and if it cant get enough fuel up there....

Posted By: Meesh Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 3:48pm
a month ago?! should definatly be under warrenty....or did you get a second hand clutch fitted?
Posted By: DavidB Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 4:50pm
Could be the oil seal leaking all over the clutch plate. Take the cover off the bottom in the middle (go under the car), it's held on by a few bolts. Have a look inside for black deposits.
Posted By: scoop Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 5:39pm
It may be ur crank case seal mate, I went through a clutch in 12 months cos of that, U need a new clutch for sure mate and a replaced seal or two.

The clutch may be good as new just covered in oil but they cannot be cleaned! it will never work again

Make sure the leak is fully fixed and they dont cover the new new clutch in ****e

I see 140 notes leaving ur bank account mate

Posted By: scoop Re: Steds problem - 20th Apr 2005 11:49pm
if its ur crankcase seal the garage may claim it wasnt there when they done the clutch, thus leavcing u with the bill.I cant see them admitting to leaving ur car with a leaky seal can u!

Where did you get the clutch fitted and how much did it cost you ??

Scoop is right, if it is the rear crankshaft oil seal leaking onto the clutch then its not the clutch that is faulty therefore will not be covered by your warranty if you have one ?? It will be the rear crankshaft oil seal that was faulty and leaked oil onto the clutch therefore causing it to slip. Both the rear crankshaft oil seal and the clutch would have to be replaced and this would be chargable and not warranty work if its the oil seal leaking that has caused it to slip.

Sted, I have this conversation on a daily basis. They should at least look at it for you if nothing else....

People say to me "***** Will do it cheaper" I agree, but look what happens when things go wrong. At least with a reputable garage you know they will honour the warranty and even do the job right in the first place.

After all, do you really want your car fixing from the cheapest garage, this normally means the cheapest parts are used and that they employ cheap mechanics with very little experiance.

Its ofter getting the work done from someone you know and trust, even if it costs a little more...

Just my pennies worth thumbsup

I have got to second Scooby's thoughts. If you look after your car with quality parts and service it will pay dividens later on.
Lets say iv had my pros and cons and you know the amount of trouble iv had @ times - At least learn from me and even tho it may cost a little more your paying for QUALITY and thats what should matter.

Posted By: grizz Re: Steds problem - 25th Apr 2005 9:04pm
The garage should take a look @ it , It only takes about 50 mins to change a fiesta cluch , so even if it has to be replaced it's no big deal 2 them 2 keep you happy G
