I have been told by a garage that I need a new oxygen sensor.

Can someone please tell me what this does (apart from detect oxygen). Could this be the reason my Vitesse is using a stupid amount of fuel? What price should I be paying for one? Are they easy to replace as a DIY job?

Thanks in advance.

An oxygen sensor or Lambda Sensor is a screw in sensor located in your exhaust system prior to your catalyst convertor, this sensor measures the oxygen content in the exhaust fumes and sends a signal back to the ECU to make the engine run more or less fuel accordingly. If it is faulty it is possible that is sending an incorrect signal to the ECU telling it to run more fuel hence your high fuel consumption.

Some vehicles have two oxygen sensors fitted, one before the catalyst convertor and one after, this is known as a OBD (On Board Diagnostics) System.

HI

what i wanted to say but tied myself in knots trying to. heheh...

with regard to replacment - i can only envisage problems if your old one is seised in place or similar. Just follow a workshop manual or similar for the exact instructions
