  • Price : £26,999
  • For:Stunning acceleration, and has more grip than an arm-wrestler allied to beautiful poise.
    Cult status guarantees decent residuals, and it’s practical.
    New model offers a mighty 330bhp.
  • Against : Expensive to insure and run.
    Ride is rock-solid in town, and motorway cruises are noisy.

  • Performance
    There are four Evo models, producing 261bhp, 305bhp, 326bhp and 342bhp respectively
    from the same 2.0-litre turbo engine.
    All feature six-speed gearboxes except the five-speed Evo VIII 260,
    but performance is startling across the board.
    Even the 260 hits 60mph in 6.1sec, while FQ340 makes the dash in just 4.4sec,
    and all four versions offer masses of urge in every gear.

  • Handling
    Twisty roads are where the Evo shines.
    Its levels of Tarmac-hugging tenacity defy physics,
    while it also has the balance and poise of a unicyclist on a tightrope.
    Move out of its natural playground, though, and things aren’t so rosy.
    The ride is fidgety at best and downright uncomfortable over scarred city roads at low speeds.

  • Refinement
    The Evo has been made to go fast,
    which means light weight and little sound-deadening.
    Road roar comes to the fore on motorways, although the engine isn’t far behind.
    Some road noise is even noticeable at town speeds.

    The latest model is cheaper to buy than the previous Evo,
    but it's still just as expensive to run.
    Owners will face group 20 insurance bills and service
    intervals which fall every 4500 miles.
    When it comes to sell, there will be no shortage of buyers,
    so it’ll still be worth decent money.

  • Quality
    As soon as you step inside the Evolution,
    you’ll be aware that the largest bulk of your cash
    has been spent on the go-faster bits underneath.
    The plastics used on the dashboard are slightly utilitarian,
    but should last the distance well enough.
    That said, the Momo steering wheel
    and Recaro seats are visual and tactile highlights.

  • Safety and Security
    The car’s sheer natural abilities are a safety feature,
    in that they will help you avoid trouble in the first place.
    Should an emergency arise, though, the anti-lock brakes with electronic
    brakeforce distribution will prove helpful,
    as will the twin front airbags.

  • Behind the Wheel
    There’s little in the way of visual flair in the cabin,
    with plenty of solid-looking plastic,
    although it is lifted by some carbonfibre trim and a couple
    of huge Recaro bucket seats.
    Everything’s easily located and simple to use, however.

  • Space and Practicality
    With an Evo VIII, there’s no need to keep the entertainment to yourself,
    because it’ll seat four adults in comfort. The boot’s even big enough to cope with a family’s luggage, too.
    Long trips will be punctuated by numerous fuel stops,
    though, because the tank is fairly small, and the turbo motor empties it rapidly.

  • Equipment
    The Mitsubishi isn’t exactly brimming with the latest luxury accoutrements,
    but it does have all the basics.
    When you up the pace on hot summer days,
    you’ll be glad of the standard air-conditioning system,
    and at least the stereo system is loud enough to be heard over
    the ambient noise on the motorway.
