[b]Learn theory and practice of vehicle behaviour

Automotive technology specialist Prodrive is launching a new course aimed at introducing engineers to the principles of vehicle dynamics. The course, run by Prodrive’s vehicle dynamics specialist Damian Harty will be held over three days at its technical centre and private proving ground in Warwickshire, UK.

The course is primarily aimed at professional engineers who need a foundation in vehicle dynamic behaviour and will include a mixture of classroom theory and hands-on driving. During the three days, the course will deliver an understanding of the core theory describing vehicle dynamic behaviour; provide theoretical and practical skills to identify vehicle behaviour; show how vehicle behaviour can be modified at the design and development stages; and introduce processes for systematically delivering desirable results.

“We have run similar courses for a number of vehicle manufacturers during the last 12 months and when we talked to other customers, realised that there was a real demand for more,” said Damian Harty.

During seven years at Prodrive, Damian Harty has been responsible for a variety of ride and handling programmes, as well as working on enhancing the performance of Prodrive’s rally and race cars. During the last five years, he has developed Prodrive’s Active Torque Dynamics (ATD) system using the principle of an active driveline to help enhance a car’s dynamic behaviour.

“I am very keen that theory is backed up by practical experience, so nearly half the time will be spent on the test track in a range of front, rear and four wheel drive cars to put that theory into practice, “ said Harty.

To ensure the right level of personal attention and time on the test track, numbers will be limited to 15 people. The first course will be held on 9-11 May 2005 and will cost £1,995 plus VAT per delegate, including course notes, all test vehicle expenses and lunch on each day. Prodrive is planning further courses later in the year.
