Love it or hate it the F1 Season begins again this weekend.

Lots of changes as per norm, here are some of the highlights.

Qualifying
For 2006, the single-lap system used in recent years is
replaced be a new three-part, knockout format, with
multiple cars on track throughout the qualifying hour,
which is split into two 15-minute sessions and a final
20-minute session, with five-minute breaks in between.

Part one: All 22 cars may run laps at any time during the
first 15 minutes of the hour. At the end of the first 15
minutes, the six slowest cars drop out and fill the
final six grid places.

Part two: After a five-minute break, the times will
be reset and the 16 remaining cars then will then run
in a second 15-minute session - again they may complete
as many laps as they want at any time during that period.
At the end of the 15 minutes, the six slowest cars drop
out and fill places 11 to 16 on the grid.

Part three: After another five-minute break, the times
are reset and the final 20-minute session will feature
a shootout between the remaining 10 cars to decide pole
position and the starting order for the top 10 grid places.
Again, these cars may run as many laps as they wish.

In the first two 15-minute sessions, cars may run any fuel
load and drivers knocked out after those sessions may refuel
ahead of the race. However, the top-ten drivers must begin
the final 20-minute session with the fuel load on which
they plan to start the race. They will be weighed before
they leave the pits, and whatever fuel they use in the
20 minutes may be replaced at the end of the session.

If a driver is deemed to have stopped unnecessarily on
the circuit or impeded another driver during the qualifying
session, then his times will be cancelled.

Engines
For 2006, engines are reduced in size from the previous
3-litre V10s to 2.4-litre V8s. The aim is to reduce costs
and improve safety. With similar engine speeds, the change
is expected to cut peak power by around 200bhp, which in
turn is likely to add around three to five seconds to lap
times at most circuits. The FIA may allow some teams to
use 2005-spec V10s if they do not have access to competitive V8.
The FIA will enforce a rev limit on any V10s to ensure
performance is comparable with that of a V8.

Tyres
After a season’s absence, tyre changes during races return
to Formula One in 2006. The thinking behind this is that the
reduced engine size will offset any performance gain.
Drivers also have access to slightly more tyres than in
2005 - seven sets of dry-weather, four sets of wet-weather
and three sets of extreme-weather. Drivers must make a
final choice of dry-weather compound ahead of qualifying.

Weekend schedule
In a slight change to the Grand Prix weekend format,
Saturday morning now features a single, one-hour practice
session, as opposed to two, 45-minute sessions.
It takes place between 1100 and 1200. Qualifying is
an hour later than before, commencing at 1400.

I dont know why i like the F1 so much as at times it can become boaring
as well as frustrating, but as they say it every year...
This year promises to be the best for a long time.

So if your intrested in F1 who do you tip for the championship?
Team and Driver?

Me i would love Mclaren & Kimi
But there are a few dark horses, as Renault and Alonso are tipped again as winners again.

i thought they were around 800hp? when the bugatti was on top gear gezza was talking about how much more power it has compared to formula 1. 1500 - 1400bhp? have people been playing too much granturismo? lol

Yeh it would be good to see Button get a First place this year,
all depends if he has the hunger which i hope he does have.

I think after the first 3 races we will have a better idea if its just
going to boaring again, or they have it better than ever before.

I'm looking forward to the weekend where we will see the pro's and con's in real time.

The word is that Williams my just have the quickest cosworth engine out there..

Would be a good achivement to see farrari come back and raise the anti...

Bring it on...

Well that's a better start to the F1

Would have given kim driver of the day,
starting in last place to finish 19 seconds from first place Alonso.

Loved the new Qualifying format.
Could do with a bit of tweaking as the drivers
play the game with the rules on the 3rd run.

So the Favorites to win a championship
finished 1st 2nd and 3rd
And no one just ran into the distance...
So it can only make future races tighter
and more difficult to call.

Who was your driver of the day?
Do you like the Qualifying format?
Posted By: Scooby Re: F1 2006 Chat - 12th Mar 2006 8:19pm
The qualifying was 500% better, loads of action and well better than last season.

The race itself was interesting and good the see Shuey on the podium again

NEW RULES INCLUDE ENGINE FREEZE

A three-year freeze on engine technology, a move to a single tyre supplier and the replacement of 10-place grid penalties were among the new rules approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday.

The WMSC met in Paris to ratify a new set of sporting regulations that will take effect from 2008.

Many of the reforms have been on the table for some time; the principle of a single tyre supplier, for example, was agreed at the previous WMSC meeting in December, which set out the basis for the 2008 technical regulations.

But the engine freeze is a radical – and controversial – change.

It was one of the issues about which the Grand Prix Manufacturers Association expressed concern in the letter it sent to FIA president Max Mosley on Tuesday night.

The GPMA’s 11th-hour attempt to delay ratification of some of the proposed changes pending further discussion fell on deaf ears.

The new engine rules will require teams to submit their designs for homologation by 1 June.

The specification will then be frozen and only FIA-approved modifications will be permitted.

The measure is a central plank of Mosley’s cost-cutting programme but – although proposed by GPMA member Renault – it is not popular with most of the manufacturer teams.

They fear it will undermine F1’s status as the pinnacle of technology and also that the three-year cycle will cause instability in their staffing arrangements.

Other changes approved by the WMSC include a mandatory testing limit of 30,000km (18,600 miles) per team per year, a ban on spare cars and a requirement for gearboxes to last four races.

The move back to a single tyre supplier will be accompanied by a return to slicks and a ban on tyre-warming blankets.

And instead of the current 10-place grid relegations, changing an engine before the end of its two-year cycle will attract a 15kg weight penalty.

The requirement for new teams to lodge a $48 million deposit with the FIA has also been dropped, while the WMSC held open the possibility of a 20-race calendar in future.

I think this Max Mosely has a screw loose.
What can he be thinking.

I think the break away group by Manufactures
could really happen now.

Well its the British GP Race tomorrow
and i'm off to see it smile

Dont bother looking in the grandstands,
as we are in the cheap seat,
the grass banks lol..

Me the missus Scooby and Kim will be there,
not holding out much for Jenson Button
and his recent problems (Honda)
But would like to see Kimi win as the missus is from Finland.

Going to tape the Qualifying today so i can watch the england match.

Hopefully the weather will be good for sunday and the live action amazing.

Cheap Seats = £100 for the 3 days.
But i very much doubt if anyone would
take advantage of that.

Watch the Qualifying today, see if i can spot
a palce to park me arse when i'm there.

Were leaving at 4:30am so we can get there
nice and early. The Shuttle buses start at
4am ??? First Race 9:30ish i think ??

Anyways looking forward to my first F1 Live race.

Woo Hoo
