Well, finally got there in the end.

A lot of waiting on e-mails etc from Japan, and Ive bought the car in the link below.

Very low milage, and very, very tidy smile

Will take 2-3months to get here on the slow boat from Japan and I cant wait laugh

Japanese report on the car gives it a grade 4 (5 is new), mechanically it is said to be very good (36k miles) and the interior and exterior are very tidy.

Few mods wink though Ill not be exactly sure of what they all are until it actually gets here...

Click me

....im already looking at a Wangan rear wing and Kouki lights wink

That looks sexual mate, i love it happy

Great thing about importing jap cars is that there's never any rust on them and they're always low mileage.

Looks awesome, dead happy for ya laugh

Not too sure what all the squiggles actually mean, but I think its running around the 270bhp mark already - a nice starting point wink

do a translater on google or something.

oh yer, what a car, have said in the the other thread damn good choice cant wait to see it. is this the same as the other circa 350bhp. or is there room for improvement, then again once you get your hands on it you will be looking to get 400-500 bhp same as your old red one ??
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 28th Jan 2006 2:19pm
is it a CA18DET?? if so they can see 600BHP (ask norris designs) however, somewhere on that page it sez 2.0L??? the only bit i can read lol.Whats this rear wing look like, and for those who dont kow show off the kouki conversion eek eek

[Linked Image]
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 28th Jan 2006 11:40pm
That pic has the lights and spoiler Im after happy

It has the SR20DET, not the CA fitted to the UK S13 200SX's 600 is possible from the 1.8 (I know Simon from Norris Designs, and have been lucky enough to go out in his Evo eek ) Though to get that £50k+ is needed and the CA is nowhere near as tunable as the SR (There are a few 800bhp ones round - one being the Gold Top Secret one wink )

Unsure about the power Ill be aiming for as I want the car to be very drivable. A 500bhp car may win on a drag strip, but a more drivable 350bhp car may win round the track.

I guess Ill see what happens... wink

Lovely example there Stuy. sounded good when you were tellin me the other day but now to put a pic to it is even better. Hope the wait doesn't drag too much for ya but i'm sure it'll be worth the wait!

Its being collected from the Car dealer today and taken to port ready to be shipped thumbsup

Ive also gone mad ordering parts whilst the car is still in Japan

Wangan wing has been ordered, as have the lights, just need the center garnish which thay are still looking for.

Ive also asked about a front mounted intercooler whilst Im at it - 600mm x 300mm x 76-100mm laugh

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 14th Feb 2006 2:59pm
May have to let the kouki lights go frown

Parts upon parts are needed to fit them.

Initially I thought it was 3 bits, 2 lenses, and a center garnish. I then learned you also need the lower panel. Then I learned the center garnish is in 2 parts and the place Im looking at getting them from may not supply both parts of the center garnish frown

So far the bill for just the lenses, lower panel, and garnish is near £500 with more to pay if you need both parts of the center.

May be time to start looking at some of these from Japan instead:

You can get "Lexus" style rear lights for them, but they just look [Linked Image] (Dont they all tease )

The Kouki ones will be lovely if the full kit is there, but I cant really justify paying much more than I thought I was for something that doesnt make it faster wink

Those lights are very subtile, and on an all black car... wink

Plus, its money saved to go on go faster bits wink

Car is leaving Japan on the 4th March smile

Bit later than I had hoped, but after a little confusion over transportation at least I know when it will finally be on its way over smile

Much as I would love the Kouki "Afterburner" rear lights, £500+ is a little steep for a set of rear lights frown Im still looking at some other sets on e-bay, and still may get the ones in the pics above smile

And Yes, its RWD, has a std LSD, and I hope to do New Brighton in it this year, along with a few other sprints like Ty-Croes, Aintree, maybe 2 sisters and a few others smile

Say that again Aggy and you will be hung at the next meet wink tease

Well, the Front Mounted Cooler arrived yesterday, so Ive got a nice collection of parts to fit when it arrives:

FMIC
Rear Kouki Lights
Rear Wangan Spoiler
3 Gauges (Oil press, Oil Temp and water temp)
Turbo is here, but needs manifold and external wastegate.
Rear Strut brace
Twin Plate Clutch
AP 4 pots and 330mm bells and rotors.

Im also talking to some guy down south about a pair of Skyline R32 GTR front seats for the car as buckets are a pain to fit as no-one makes subframes for the car frown

What are recaro or somethink like that ?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Mar 2006 11:18am
Not sure who makes them confused

They are very comfy, huggy seats though, and less than 1/2 the price of aftermarket seats.

Only one company - Bride, makes subframes for car, and they are around £100 each eek , then theres the price of the seats. The skyline ones only need one mounting hole enlarging and then they go straight in smile
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Mar 2006 4:26pm
wouldnt mind a set of them myself, but would have to be leather to be inkeeping with my full leather interior.

If you dont mind me asking how much did they set you back

Unfortunatly they dont do them in black leather though, and expect to pay £3-400 for a pair in decent nick wink

how much!!!

Mr money bags or what.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 7th Mar 2006 11:42am
When you consider subframes for the S13s are £100 each eek and another £200 per seat, this is the cheap option smile

Its gonna look sexual from the start. Those seats are sweet, and the lights, well,u may or may not know but i absolutely love S13s and want one in a few years, and kouki lights are on my list of things to buy (or maybe dream of buying cos theyre so expensive lol)

LOl, TBH Ill prolly leave it as it is for a while before fiddling - make sure everything is as it should be etc.

Seats may get changed nearly straight away, but I recon Ill be too busy driving it for the first week laugh

The spare room is looking very very full indeed now, and Ive still been ordering more bits. In addition to whats already here, Im waiting on a Blitz Turbo timer, an Alloy cooling pannel (Sits between the gap at the top of the front bumper and the slam pannel to keep the air flowing over the rad and FMIC) and Ive bought a spare headlight cover which I intend to modify with a vent for a cold air feed direct to the filter which is behind the light laugh

Well, the slow boat has turned in to the very slow boat and rather than docking tomorrow, looks like its gonna be the weekend frown

Still, I guess easter weekend would have hampered things anyway.... frown

Few More bits have alos been added to the collection in the spare room:

Cooling pannel to sit between bumper and slam pannel to keep air flowing where it should.

Greddy Profec B Spec 2 (Boost controller) to replace the Spec 1 thats in it.

Spare headlight cover which is in the process of getting vented for a cold air feed (Filter is behind the headlight)

Samco Coolant hoses (Though these seem to have gone walkies in the post)

Pair of Luke 3", 4 point Harnesses

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 10th Apr 2006 2:53pm
Excited aint the word!!! Im running out of finger nails doh

The hoses where a private sale, im going to give them a few more days and try the local sorting office, but if they dont show by the end of the week, the seller (Who is a trader, but these are used, off his private car) will give me a refund smile

...rather have the hoses though, they are currently out of stock in the UK, and this was a diamond buy frown

Ive actually got someone in Japan bidding on this one for me.

Lip isnt quite a deep which is good as it wont catch everywhere, its also an OEM Kouki item and made from plastic rather than GRP and very rare eek

how different is that to the current one on it? the current one looks similar.I trawled autotrader last night and have decided i deffo want a 200 next, theyre cheaper and better (for me) than a scooby. Id love a scooby but i'd be too scared to mod it,cos i wouldnt be able to afford new pistons and just chipping a scooby can kill pistons

Any idea when your cars going to be here?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 21st Apr 2006 10:13am
Well, its been delayed, but at least I now know the real reason why its soooooo late!

I bought the car, and the japs put in on the dock ready for shipping. I then bought the rear wing and asked them to put it in the car to save on the shipping. I only thought it'd take a day or so to get the wing, but, no, it took nearly a month to get the wing, and rather than contact me and let me know, they have kept the car on the dock side until the wing was in the boot rather than send the car and wing seperatly!!! Car didnt actually leave until 2nd April so isnt due till the end of this month / start of next frown

Then theres about 10 more days on that once its here to get it registered etc, fingers crossed it should be here mid May prehaps confused

Also why is the insurance higher on a 180 than a 200 is that because its a import??

Looking forward to seeing it.
Posted By: AX_125 Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 10th May 2006 2:41pm
i was told imports are automatically group 20, only specialist insurance companies tend to insure them.

Aplan have been the best for my quote on a teg type r
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 10th May 2006 2:46pm
TBH Ive found the insurance to be the same as a 200SX - S14/a that is.

Its more than the S13 200SX as the 180 has the 2.0 rather than the 1.8.

Ill run ya round the block in it matey, but Im pretty sure it'll be nothing like a std UK S13 raftl

Failed its MOT on a couple of things -

Needs braided brake lines tidying (Easy with some zip ties)

The Crazy japs have also gone mad lightening the car!!! eek They have removed some parts of the underside of the car to reduce weight, and these need welding back (Unfortunatly the cage which makes up the strength again, isnt taken in to account on the UK MOT)

It also needs 4 tyres and Im waiting for them to arrive and get fitted. Very awkward (And expensive size) - 235/45/17 front, and 255/40/17 eek on the rear wink

Im still optomistic about maybe collecting it late next week though smile

Ouch mate, what bits had they chopped out of the floor?

How much are those 4 tyres gonna set u back?

Did u know the tyres were bald when u bought it?

Sounds like a silly thing to check when importing a car but when buying in the UK its one thing EVERYONE does
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 1st Jun 2006 9:06am
Not too sure which bits where removed, but I was told it was done a while ago so it cant be that bad considering the rest of the cars spec, its just the red tape that goes with the UK MOT frown

Tyres are covered by the costs of importing, though I am contributing some towards getting a really good brand fitted - had no idea it needed them when I initially bought it.

SHES FINALLY HERE

Went to pick her up on thursday, and its been well worth thae wait smile

The paint isnt actually a flat black, but it has a gold / bronze pearl in it which I never knew about, it also scrubs an inside tyre when pulling of of junctions - after getting it up in the air it appears to have an aftermarket, plated, 1.5 way LSD on it wink laugh

Fitted quite a few of the bits for it now as well, inc the Skyline seats and a Sterio...

No Pics as yet, but will come later this week smile

Will try and get some pics towards the end of the week, working away at the moment so wont get the chance to take any.

Front splitter is off the car at the moment as it was just to low, but Im gonna get the new bumper, splitter, wing, headlight cover painted as soon as I can and throw them all on together along with the rear lights.

Car runs great considering the bigger injectors, MAF and different ECU smile

...and yup, that was me going in to Sainsburys last night smile
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 12th Jun 2006 6:33pm
The people demand pics.Glad ur pleased with it stuy!

What causes the scrubbing, and is it me or is it wierd to scrub when pulling away,do u mean tunring and pulling away or just going straight on pulling away?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 12th Jun 2006 10:00pm
Its when you turn tightly.

Its because the diff is so tight in limiting how much slip is allowed between the rear wheels, it scrubs the inside tyre as it doesnt want to allow it as much slip as needs to make the turn - only really does it when pulling out of 90 degree junctions - gonna be fun in the wet wink
Posted By: Scooby Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 13th Jun 2006 12:43am
Thats one tight diff mate if its scrubbing the tread on lock happy happy

It is going to drift big time mate......

Carnt wait to see the car in the flesh.
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 13th Jun 2006 9:49pm
Oh,i thought u meant scrubbing arches. Not LSD power. Thats awful tight isnt it. That a good thing or a bad?
Posted By: Scooby Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 13th Jun 2006 10:47pm
Its good, Drift city happy
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 14th Jun 2006 5:54pm
but what about everyday road use, wont it provoke unsteer/oversteer cos the arse is dragging?
Posted By: Scooby Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 14th Jun 2006 7:15pm
When driving in a straight line the diff dosnt really effect the driving as the power is distributed evenly as each rear wheel is turning the same, when turning there is a resistance as the inner wheel turns slower than the outside wheel. With a tight LSD it Limits the amount of slip which the diff alows.

This is so if wheel spin occurs then its not just one wheel that spins like a standard car, with a LSD then both wheels would spin which gives more traction. The other advantage is that if both rear wheels spin then when you break traction then its easier to DRIFT happy
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 14th Jun 2006 10:50pm
Cheers for Explaining that Jay happy

Driving the car on the road, yes it does make it a little more tail happy, but it is a lot more predictable than a std viscous LSD smile

Only really notice the tyres scrubbing when pulling out of 90 degree junctions, as normal corners dont turn tight enough to get to the limit of the diff.

Lol, yeah the filter will get changed - need to find one from a 300ZX as that is the airflow meter and adapter it has fitted smile

It currently running about 8psi as I kept blowing a bung which which was intended to have the std dump valve fitted to it, so Ive been keeping the boost low, though it still has no problem lighting the tyres up in 1st in the dry wink

The engine and map should be good for 15psi+ which I hope to build up to for the next rolling road day smile

what size is the bung as i might be able to be one made up for you

35mm, but I ordered one from tweeks on Saturday, cheers for the offer though happy

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Jun 2006 11:16am
Ive also had fitted (With big thanks to Webby) a plain black sunstrip.

With the car having a cage fitted the front roof bar needs the std sunvisors removing so it will fit. This is a nightmare when the sun gets low, hence why Ive needed the sunstrip fitting.

Ive also got a few more bits and bobs on order:

New K&N with Z32 AFM adapter
Bung to block DV feed on the intercooler
1.3 bar Radiator cap for improved cooling effiency
Koyo Alloy radiator (Increased volume)

Tomei PonCams (mentioned above) - these will be fitted as soon as they arrive laugh

More bits on order laugh

Just ordered a Stainless, tubular manifold and enquiring about a dump pipe which has a dump to atmosphere wastegate exit wink

[Linked Image]
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Jul 2006 11:55am
screamer pipe on route then stuy?? How much more power would a manifold give onn a turbo car?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Jul 2006 2:26pm
Some makers of the manifolds claim 15-20bhp, though Id be surprised if you get 10bhp from them. However they let the exhaust gasses out faster and more efficiently as they are all the same length, and thus help keep exhaust gas temps down, and improve turbo spool times smile
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Jul 2006 10:15pm
Know everyone knows i dont know anthing about turbos or engines for that matter.

But i have heard that equal lengh manifolds dont do much. purely because of the pattern the piston fire at. so the gases would reach the turbo at different times anyway.
Posted By: Sanchez Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Jul 2006 12:10am
stu, thats looks cheap and nasty, how much you pay for that tak.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Jul 2006 9:02am
Cali, thats the idea of equal lenght manifolds tease

As they are all equal length the exhaust gases all arive at different times, rather than a std manifold and the gasses from 2 cylinders arriving at the same time and causing congestion. Maybe not so important in an N/A car, but temps run much higher in turbo cars and manifold efficiency can be very important.

Andy,

What makes you think it looks cheap and nasty? It has the lower brace prefitted, is made from 3.1mm Stainless, all the ports are matched and machined and the pipes are seamless (made from 1 piece and bent, rather than a few pieces welded) tease
Posted By: Sanchez Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Jul 2006 11:22am
it looks like the cheap shiney one i bought for my honda that went gold after two days, what make is it ?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Jul 2006 11:31am
Not sure about the make as there are a few of them about confused

The ones to avoid are the ones supplied without the support bracket and the ones where the pipes have been welded for the bends (They crack)

As for it going gold - thats what colour stainless goes when it gets hot smack
Posted By: AX_125 Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 4th Jul 2006 11:38am
Does it go gold enough to pass as gold?

Also fitted the Tomei Cams over the weekend, but I think a few more tweeks with the timing are needed as its running a little warmer than before and I think it may be a little more advanced than it needs to be confused

Slagging off kouki lights...............Blasphamy

Those brakes are hoooge. DO those calipers not touch the wheel? Bet that stops well now, Noticed a gain from the cams or just warmer running?

U dont half work fast stu
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 17th Jul 2006 11:47am
The calipers did touch the wheels, but the AP calipers are alloy, and I had to shave a few mm off the back of them to get them in (Perfectly acceptable with this kind of caliper), and it now stops really well smile

The car runs about 10 degress warmer with the cams in, circa 85-90 degrees and it was 75-80 before, but this could be down to running a little to much advance in the ignition timing (Cam timing is spot on) as it is maxxed out on it adjustment.

I havnt however heard an det and the advance may explain why it feels like a 20-30bhp incease in power.

Im getting a timing strobe on it tomorrow to check the ignition timing, and will move the crank angle sensor one tooth to get full adjustment back again smile
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Jul 2006 9:22am
Just bought a new turbo for the car laugh

Well, its covered 2000 miles, is like new and has come from a known, reliable source smile

Its a Garrett 2871R with .60 compressor A/R and the big .86 exhaust A/R. It made 352bhp at 1.2 bar (17psi) on the car its come from, and the turbo is capable of 1.8bar+, which with the right mods can equate to 450bhp eek

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Its also tapped on the exhaust housing for a Defi EGT probe, and is a direct fit replacment for the std turbo, so theres no faffing round getting it to fit smile

Should be here in a week or so once my money transfer has cleared.
Posted By: Scooby Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Jul 2006 10:40am
I dont know Stuy, little boys playing with Big Toys, It will end in Tears...............

(Scooby lies on the pavement banging his head against the floor as Stuy drives past pushing 400 plus horses)

I take it this turbo will boost up faster than the last turbo you fitted ?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Jul 2006 10:48am
Yeah, this turbo starts boosting at about 2000-2500rpm and hits max boost before 4000rpm, its a very good and common upgrade for the engine.

After the laggyness of the last turbo, I thought it was a good idea to go for something thats been tried and tested oshocked
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 24th Jul 2006 2:35pm
Had a slight problem on saturday whilst showing a new M3 where he came in the pecking order...

At the end of a little blat down a duel carrageway I heard a loud tapping from the engine. Thankfully it was top end, and although the car ran, it was quite lumpy. Got recovered home, and pulled the cam cover off on sunday to find - to my relief:

[Linked Image]

Just a rocker arm popped off the lifter and valve - caused by the cams. I have fitted some rocker arm stoppers which should stop this, but Im thinking they may need a little modifying so that they cover the back of the rocker arms to stop this happening again.

Lost one of the shims from the top of a valve, just ordered this from Nissan - a part the size of a watch battery, and they want £5 for it eek Should be here Wednesday though, and I can get it back on the road and running again smile
Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 24th Jul 2006 8:51pm
Lucky matey.

Did you get the car running right after the cams went in???

At least you knew when to STOP !
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Jul 2006 9:31pm
Yeah, got it running fine after fitting the cams, there was an issue (still is) with ignition timing, but I now know how to sort it when I put it back together after this little mishap wink
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Jul 2006 9:34pm
U say u lost a shim? where did u lose it? its not fell down into a nook in the head has it?

good luck gettin it running
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Jul 2006 9:42pm
Ive had a good look round the head with a magnet, and still not found it confused

As its the last valve before the back of the head I suspect its dropped down an oil way in to the sump where it cant do any harm.

The engine will get turned manually when Ive put it back together to check though smile
Posted By: MrPhil Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Jul 2006 11:41pm
this is a bit off a guess but because the shim has come loose does this mean that the valve springs have not been able to keep up with the rpm? think
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 26th Jul 2006 12:20am
Yes, which is why rocker arm stoppers where fitted at the same time, and that Im gonna check there positioning (may need a little modding) when the parts are refitted.

If it does it again, with the rocker arm stoppers in the correct position, uprated valve springs will be needed happy
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 24th Aug 2006 11:18am
Been a while since I updated this...

Car is booked in with a company called APT in Norwich in October to have a few bits and bobs done wink

They are fitting a metal headgasket, tubular manifold, new dump pipe, my t2871R turbo, 720cc injectors, twin plate clutch kit, Apexi Power FC and mapping everything up.

They are also going to check the cam settings when the head is off to make sure everything is as it should be.

When it gets back it'll be going in for the front lip to get fitted and painted - there just doesnt really seem much point doing it just yet as the money is needed to get all the other bits done frown

The car the turbo came off mader 352bhp at 17psi, and Ive also found out that he had a cracked exhaust valve when it ran that figure, and was using smaller injectors than the 720's Ill be using, so I hope to get a little more bhp than 352.. wink

Posted By: red20 Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 24th Aug 2006 5:17pm

Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 24th Aug 2006 10:07pm
Go stu lad.

That should be good for around 400bhp or just alittle less anyways.

When you hoping to be back on the road?? Guess your not running at sprints in Oct then.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Aug 2006 9:16am
APT only need it for a week - sat to sat, so I should have it back round the 14th Oct smile

At the moment, Id guess its running mid to high 200's confused
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 5th Sep 2006 8:16am
To spoil or not to spoil....

Initially I thought Id leave the car despoilered, but Im not having second thoughts confused

Looking at maybe going all out Kouki, already got the front bumper, skirts, rear lights, so all that leaves is the rear spoiler, currently looking at this one:

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Its a genuine item, not a GRP copy, and the kit on the car in the top pic is very similar to mine....

Im getting the front end of the car painted when it comes back from APT as the bumper is a different black, so painting the wing wont be a problem...

think
Posted By: Scooby Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 5th Sep 2006 8:28am
I dont like the spoiler on its own but i like it fitted in that last picture.

If you have the front bumper & sciets then you might as well put the icing on the cake and get the spoiler....

Wouldnt it be rude not to ??

I like the spoiler in your first pic the one you've bought!
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 9th Oct 2006 7:27am
Well, I dropped her off on Saturday in Norwich smile

They have all the remaning parts there, apart from the Power FC which they expect will be in early this week. All the Mechanical work should be done in the first 1/2 of the week, and then its just fitting and mapping the FC.

If it does turn up this week, I should be picking it back up next Saturday smile
Posted By: Mark Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 9th Oct 2006 12:53pm
Its going to be a long week then ? sick
Is this the end of the engine work now?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 9th Oct 2006 1:20pm
Lol, nope grin

I have a spare engine in the shed at home, and Ive requested they keep the std head gasket for me to make sure the UK block is compatible with the Jap head.

If they will match up then the spare bottom end will be getting built up with some forged pistons and rods, Ill get a bigger turbo, bigger injectors and get a re-map for a little more power wink
Posted By: Mark Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 9th Oct 2006 1:59pm
Somthing for a rainy day then raftl
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 11th Oct 2006 2:14pm
Well, just had a call from APT and the mechanical work is nearly complete, but they still havnt received the Power FC frown

This means its going to be delayed, not sure how long by as its all dependant on how long the ECU takes to get here. APT Are pretty hopeful it will be here by the end of the week, but that means it wouldnt get mapped till next week....

However, after waiting for this car to come from Japan, I wont be holding my breath.... whistle
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Nov 2006 1:36pm
Found the problem with the clutch, and its turned out that its the release bearing and carrier that where the problem. The new one is much shorter and the release bearing is a smaller diameter.

[Linked Image]

Clutch is being fitted today, should be mapped early next week ready for collection grin
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 10th Nov 2006 9:15am
Picked her up yesterday from Norwich and had a good 7 hour drive home to get used to her again.

[email protected] bar was the figure quoted by APT, though they have had their own cars on their rollers and others, and found others, noticably, Well Lane, to read 30bhp higher whistle

350 certainly feels enough (for now) as it was squirming round, looking for traction in 3rd (in the dry) leaving the M6 toll booths omg

May yet put it on the Peco rollers next weekend, but it certainly feels more than 50bhp more than the last one (which made 300bhp), though wether thats down to the rollers, or it being a lighter car, Im not too sure....
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 13th Nov 2006 2:59pm
Cars back, and Im spending again laugh

Just bought this - though there is about a 3 week wait for it.

looks nice, any bhp from that of just makes it run better/safer?
Posted By: Mark Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 22nd Nov 2006 8:49pm
Where you going to fit it?

Is there space?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Nov 2006 9:15am
No performance increase from it, just the safety that the oil isnt going to get on track days.

The remote filter will get fitted on the inner wing for ease of changing the filter and the cooler itself will probably get mounted either in front of the inter cooler or inside the n/s front wing smile

Anyways, wheels arrived yesterday and I test fitted them on the car (they will get fitted once she has all been painted wink )

Ultralite Battle wheels, 17x8 (35 offset)on the front with 225/45/17 Falkens and 17x9 (38 offset) on the rear with 255/40/17 Falken Tyres

Maybe its cos i am used to seeing your old wheels on it.

Have you taken the tints off the back or didnt it have any as the windows look different.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Nov 2006 2:42pm
Still got the tints in it, but they are only a light tint, think the poop weather and water on the glass reduce the effect...

I think they suit the car well thumbsup
Posted By: scoop Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Nov 2006 5:45pm
like the new mods, wheels are perfect stuy.even tempted to say theyre better than 18s.18s wud make it look more show but less go IMO.massive wheels are for show cars IMO. Shame its gone past COTY time cos u now have the best car on CW
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Nov 2006 8:11pm
Cheers for the comments peeps. Maybe 18s would have looked better, but the S13 handles much better on 17's, and as Scoop says, its more about the "go", than the "show" for me.

They may look small from the side, but the rubber is deffinatly not small, 225 front and 255 rear eek

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 22nd Dec 2006 8:12pm
It was in the body shop for near on 4 weeks omg

Told the guy I wasnt in a hurry so he took his time to keep the costs down. Bits I had done where the rear spoiler, front bumper painted to match the colour, scratch on a wing blown in, head light cover, front splitter and bumper spats, and of course, Ive put the new wheels on.

Bits Im hoping to fit over the holidays are the oil cooler kit with remote filter housing (This also has take offs for the oil temp and pressure gauge so they will be working), original gearbox which has been re-conned, EGT gauge, and a new dump pipe with a wastegate screamer pipe smile

Im sure Ill also find other bits to do when Im tinkering lol

Stu what/where do i get the front lights and repeaters from for when i get the new bumper on mine.

Think there the same as yours.

Also the screamer pipe you bought can i buy the same one for mine as i may as well do that when i put the fmic on.

Jimbo you'll have a full on sex wee when you see it in the metal so to speak this car is stunning.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 8th Jan 2007 5:46pm
Unfortunatly matey, the screamer pipes are only done for the SR engine - not seen any for the CA frown

The lights are turn signals (I hope your sitting down) cost a fortune from Nissan, and are really hard to get hold of in this country.

The side lights you can get from Ebay.com but expect to pay £100 for the pair, and the round front indicators are a similar price - if you can find them frown
Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 8th Jan 2007 6:52pm
Doh trust me to get the bumper that takes the most expensive lights raftl

Cheers stu.

Not sure how clear it is in the piccy, but HIDs have now been fitted to the car smile

Lights are 10000000 times better than the std S13 headlights, they where a bit tricky to fit - sussing out where to connect everything to, but the result is well worth it laugh

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Jan 2007 10:07am
Just been speaking to Bren at Apex Performance, and he has just ordered a new, high volume plenum. He intended to order it for the UK S14 SR20DET, but one for a 180SX has turned up (Plenum is the other way up). Hes therefore offered it to me nice and cheap to test fit, and see what the quality is like.

They are higher volume than std so will improve power "on boost", plus they are mirror polished laugh

Is there ever an end to the add-ons lol...

Looking amazing Stuy,
and Roll bars too....

Do they have anything to do with making it
New Brighton "Sprint" legal ??
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 23rd Jan 2007 11:42am
They are just another add on to stiffen the car up, and keep it more level through the corners smile

The Plenum, well, theres always a little more room for performance, just really considering Race Logics Traction Control system.

Only problem is their system uses the ABS sensors for wheel speed, mine doesnt have ABS so on top of the price of the TC, I have to buy 4 x sensors and figure out a way of getting a toothed pickup on the rear (Std ABS system uses 1 toothed wheel on the diff, though I have S14 front hubs so already have teeth there)

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 5th Jun 2007 6:03pm
Right the time has come to bite the bullet as it where, and Im just ordering a set of .5mm oversized forged pistons (with clips, rings and locks), a set of forged rods (with arp bolts), and a full set of hardened ACL mains, con rod and thrust bearings.

I already have a new oil and water pump in the house, along with a full gasket set, so as soon as the pisons, rods and bearings arrive its gonna be rebuild time.

As soon as she is run in I should be able to get it remapped for a little more boost and get the 740 injectors working a bit harder and get a few more geegees from it wink

Hell yes i have looked into this of late and stu i looking at around 450bhp.

Oh and cheers for the anti roll bars thumbsup

The upshot is that the rods and pistons are lighter and better balanced for higher rpm - the pistons are also forged which means they will take more temperatute which means more power laugh

Nice mate,
I know you have said this before but how long will the upgrades take one started?

And how far away is it going?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 22nd Jun 2007 9:31am
Well, I was having a chat with Neil last night, and he says his Starion Race car is nearly ready which will free up a ramp in his garage wink

Initially I was going to take the car to APT in Norwich, but he has now offered to let me use the ramp / do the engine. So, as soon as the Starion is fully out of his garage, mine can go on the ramp.

The rebuild timescale however isnt as easy to predict. If everything goes well, it could take 2 weeks, however, should a specialist part be required, it could take 6-8weeks - who knows. Im also getting some head work done, port polishing, gas flowing, and bigger inlet valves if feasable - again, the work (Labour) that will go in to that isnt easy to work out think

When its built, theres 1000miles of gentle driving to run it in frown and then theres a trip to APT in Norwich to get the car mapped for a bit more power wink
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Aug 2007 8:18am
Well, I think Ive gathered all the parts I need for this now, and on Sunday, its getting taken up to my mates garage (One with the Starion), and work will begin grin

Been ordering stuff non stop from the US over the last few weeks, so much that the UPS man knows my first name now smile

Shouldnt take too long, but Im going away for 2 weeks at the end of August, so I hope my mate will finish it off for me while Im away, and it will be ready for running in when I get back in Sept wink

Missed driving it recently, since the MOT and TAX ran out, but roll on run in time, and Im gonna be driving it all the time to get the miles up - all be it nice and slowely whistle
Posted By: Mark Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Aug 2007 8:33am
Good work stuy fella,
lets hope its a smooth transition and like you say
your mate has it all boxed off for you.

Ahh i see in the previous post you will also get it mapped afterwards too. Almost there then wink
Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 3rd Aug 2007 8:58pm
Good lad glad you have all the stuff.

Look forward to seeing it off your drive.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 17th Aug 2007 9:48am
Well, the cars now gone in, engine has been removed, and its now in bits.

We have found 2 initial problems:

1,

One of the shims that sit on the valve spring retainer wasnt seated correctly.

2,

The big end bearings had worn through to the copper - though the crank is fine smile

The block has now been sent off for the machine work, and will take a few days, though Im going away for 2 weeks which will hold things up a little.

Posted By: BMW Joe Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 17th Aug 2007 11:35am
sounds good.

what machine work is being done on the block?

was the valve spring causing any problems?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 17th Aug 2007 11:53am
The block needs to be bored (Im going 0.5mm oversized) and decked.

Dont think it was the springs causing the problems, though when the cams where fitted I had a lifter problem which could have caused the shim to move - springs / lifters / rocker arms / retainers / cams / shims are all parts of the valve train, so it may have been a combination...

Glad to hear its commeing and i hold you to what you said at the rock on tuesday.

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 5th Sep 2007 7:45am
Well, now Im back the car is coming on nicely smile

The bottom end is now built, and complete, down to alternator, PAS and AC motors all being fitted. Head has been ported and polished, though Im just waiting on a set of valve guides which are on route from the US.

Other than the guides, its all going well, fingers crossed, it should only be a matter of days once the guides arrive smile

ahhh good work that man.

I'm amazed at the way you can be so patient with waiting for
things to be done / deliveries etc..

I would be climbing the walls.

Just been on the phone to my mate, and the car is now all up and running. He did ask for some advise on the base timing setting, which is a little more complex that a std car due to the PowerFC.

...all it needs now is the MOT yipee

u'll have to get some vids up when u got it on the road tease

Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 18th Sep 2007 6:02pm
Well Neil said he was MOTing it today - Ive not spoken to him, but I have taxed the car on-line so it must be tested now or it would have let me do it wink

All going well, I should pick it up tomorrow on the way home from work thumbsup
Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 18th Sep 2007 6:25pm
Do you want me to drive it back for you matey raftl

Glad its up and running now matey will be good to see it running again.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Sep 2007 10:54am
Cars now back home, taxed, MOTd and insured thumbsup

God, Ive missed the burble of the SR20 wink

Despite the engine running absolutly sweet at idle and on cruise, its very hesitant when moving the throttle due to all the changes that have been made during the rebuild, so it drives like a pig.

Ive booked the car in to Dyno Demon in Neston on Saturday morning - they are going to do a low load map - up to about 4000rpm with no boost to make the car a bit smoother and make the run in period a little easier smile
Posted By: spinking Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Sep 2007 7:18pm
Was talking to neil when i was there on weds matey he said it was a bugger to get the timing right.

Looked goo forgot what its sounds like.

Oh and who is the skyline at his garage looked verynice.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Sep 2007 10:37pm
great stuff.

you going to be driving it a lot then to run it in?
Posted By: Davey_Martin Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 20th Sep 2007 10:43pm
me brother used to work in the same garage can remember some pics he had of a db5 that was there a couple yrs ago with the log book... such a nice car
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 21st Sep 2007 7:11am
The timing is only an issue because of the Power FC - you set the ignition timing to that, rather than XXdeg BTDC.

It has been getting driven, there aer nearly 100 miles on it now, but out in it last night, it sprung a leak frown Was the first tiem its really got up to full temp, and its dripping a bit of oil, so its gonna have to go back in to find out where its coming from....

Other than that, I was quiet busy last night... Washed and polished it, plumbed back in, oil pressure gauge, oil temp gauge, EGT gauge, fixed the headlight that was bodged for the MOT, fixed the turbo timer (Loose wire) and fixed the illumination for boost gauge smile

Sounds like you have your friend back smile
A Happy stuy on the drive.

Your neighbours must think,

"I wouldn't buy one of them, his is always at the garage"
little do they know is being tweaked lol.

Ive already posted about that tease

Its now had its oil changes following the running in, might have to leave the remap till after Christmas though - The Honda is using most of my funds at the moment...
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 25th Jan 2008 11:33am
Been a while since I updated this thread as Ive been mad busy with work and the Honda!

The Nissan is currently being mapped following the rebuild - may get it back over the weekend, or maybe early next week, will post some recent pics when it gets back of some bits Ive done, and hopefully, a Power graph wink
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 2nd Feb 2008 1:07pm
Well, heres the graphs.... smile

Pretty happy, they kept (as requested) the boost down (the turbo is capable of 1.8bar) to 1.3-1.4bar.

So, since the rebuild, the boost hasnt really been increased, yet its making 27bhp more smile

..they recon if the boost was increased to the turbos max capabilities, 400bhp would easily be passed wink

Yeah, was round there at that sorta time smile

Seems to be running really well, bit awkward on a cold start as the injectors find it hard to run at a low demand when cold but thats something I need to live with.

As for where next - maybe traction control - cant see there being any need for more power.................. yet raftl

Hids are now working again...

Had one stop working, ordered a new set as spares, only to find it was a dodgy connection on the main lamp relay [Linked Image]

...still I can see where Im going at night again now smile
Posted By: StuyMac Re: StuyMac : Nissan 180SX - 26th Mar 2008 11:11am
Cars going back to Dynodemon next Wednesday (should be picking it back up on Thursday Evening in time for the meet wink )

Now Ive got used to it a little more, Ive noticed at the top end of the rev range in 4th its picking up a little Det on the knock sensor. Car has been a bit scary to notice the knock light until now, but as Ive got used to it, Ive been checking stuff out when driving.

There has been no ticking noise that has been noticable, so I think its only very very slight, still DynoDemon are happy to take it back and have a look at it for me smile

....it may just turn out to be a bad batch of fuel...

Temporary solution has been to knock the boost down a little - 1.3bar...
