my daughter has a fiat punto. She put the key in to start it and itmakes a noise butthe engine is not kicking in. The stereo comes on and the locking is working, so don't think it's the battery.
Any ideas?
Thanks
what kind of noise and petrol or deisel?
it's deisel.sounds like it's going to start but not turning over.(don't know much about cars as you can tell).
The locking and radio would still work even if the battery had lost (some) power. If you tur the lights on and try to start it, if the lights dim then the battery has not got enough juice for the starter motor.
If you could get a video and put a link from youtube then it will be easier to diagnose.
could be heater plugs in this weather!!!
put in gear and give it a push, when moving fast enough take foot of clutch and it should start.

+Ignition on, it will need power & you dont want the steering lock kicking in.
Thanks for all info. Just in process of trying it again.
Does the engine actually turn over when you turn key, could be starter motor.
Could be the immobiliser. Do any lights come on on the dash that didn't used to? Is there any engine coolant in/enough as I know it was a cold night last night and it could have frozen. Its worth trying to figure it out without trying to turn it over too much because if its something like a serious oil leak/broken belt the engine could get damaged by turning it over.
Could also be the glow plus relay/glow plugs.
Thanks for all replies.
Please DON'T laugh, just found out it didn't have a diesel battery in it!
