The handbook will tell you and if you don't have that then Google will for sure. You don't say what car you have but I will be surprised if Google does not give the answer. Normally very straight forward to split the fob to access the battery.

I have a Renault and the fob is a complete mare to open. I have to use a combination of very gentle brute force to open it

I think Halfords or similar will do it. You'll need to buy the battery somewhere like that anyway

I went to Halfords first and they would sell me the battery but would not fit it - they're not allowed to apparently.
The key cutting / phone unlocking shop opposite Primark in Birkenhead did fit one for me but all he did was force it open the same as I had to do on the other one.

If its this fob, then it just prises apart. Had a couple in the past and thats how they come apart. You just need a thin, flat blade screwdrive between the 2 halves and prise it open.

Maybe someone in the past has glued it?

You can buy the cases on Ebay cheap enough if it has been glued and breaks.

Mine is similar to that StuyMac but the instructions are to "slide" them apart and NOT to prise - no The only way I (and a friend of mine who is a mechanic) cn open it is to prise gently - ish!

I guess if it breaks, it breaks. Either way, its useless unopened with a dead battery.

Use a bit more force, and if it breaks get a new case once you have changed the battery smile

Had one on the MGF, just stick a butter knife in the seam and crack it open. Cases are £1 on ebay.

If you change the battery, you have to press the button 10 times to recode it to the ECU.
