As the Pinzgauer is now 38 years old and in better nick than me, I've been waiting for a decent replacement. I'm impressed by the 6x6 variant of this:-

In all-over matt black with a wiki sticker on the back, bye bye Tunnel tolls !!! Oh sorry, was that YOUR Beemer I just parked on top of ??

Would you really get across the Mersey in that?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 10:00am
Well is "says" it's amphibious. Boat type chassis ?
Posted By: bert1 Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 10:07am
At least it will have less fatalities than the Titanic,
How many lamp posts to the gallon will it do, don't want to upset the greenies.

I want one!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 10:14am
Yes Bert, I think you would have to plan your route very carefully from Filling Station to Filling Station.

Wow i like that, how many pennies are they?
Posted By: Colgo Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 10:34am
According to the specs, about 20mpg urban and 14mpg offroad !
dont fancy filling a 24 gallon tank to often though.
Could be quite amusing in the supermarket car park.

Hi pp. I couldn't find the price of the beast. Maybe it's best not to know. It's probably a bit more than what's fallen down the back of the sofa. (my price range at the moment!)

At 20mpg it's more "economical" (ha.ha.ha.ha.)than the Pinz (16mpg). Obviously the way to go then eh ?
Posted By: poodlepup Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 11:07am
Hi Pinz,it would be ideal for me,i'm struggling to manage my boat on my own, maybe its time to downsize!

Are you off out soon in the pinz?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 11:27am
Stick with your beautiful boat pp. I can't think of a more stress-free life ! I'm not "really" envious. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

On the stress-free sketch, this afternoon I'm throwing all my walking gear, grub and alch's into the Pinz. Off in the morning for a couple of days at the bothy in the hills. Got a bit of cementing and window frame painting to do there as well. Overall reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel relaxin'. Wouldn't mind swopping the boat for the bothy for a weekend though. (Hint that is as subtle as an air-raid eh ??) ha.ha. Are you firing up the Kubota compression-ignition device soon ?

There's a big(ish) burn to cross in the Pinz en route to the bothy, so I'm hoping for a couple of dry days!

Just spotted this :-

I'm going to check the sofa AGAIN !!!!!

Glad to hear your finally taking pinz for a ride!

I've fired her up,she's ready to go,its just me letting the side down, still weak as a kitten!

Swapsie's sounds good,when?

Have you found anymore dosh down the sofa?
Posted By: bert1 Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 12:05pm
Lucky bugger Pinz, I'll just keep looking at the scene on the shortbread tin.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 1:11pm
Pinz, I presume you have another vehicle other than the Pinz?

It's a bit of fun but I can't think of anything more impractical.

Posted By: poodlepup Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 1:15pm
Its not impractical, when you see where he lives!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 1:56pm
Where does he live?

Somewhere with no shops to go to?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a play, but people at Sainsbury's would hate me!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 2:27pm
Yes, I do have daily car/modern tinware. The Pinz is VERY practcal indeed. That's why I bought it ! In the snows (I live at 730'ASL and very exposed, fields on all sides) it's only the tractor and the Pinz that gets down to the public road. Regularly pull stuck LR's out. Every couple of weeks or so, I take building materials, walking gear, nosh/alch's to a remote spot in the Borders. LR's struggle and I know of a Volvo 4x4 that didn't make it and did over a grand's worth of damage (rock crawling). Oh yes, nearly forgot the river. A Mountain Rescue LR had to wait 3hrs to get across on a practice rescue 3 yrs back. Same flow and depth (there's a Staff Gauge on the bank), the Pinz crossed OK.

Yes, it IS fun to drive (I pay dearly for it though) but your comment "I can't think of anything more impractical" is the most laughable comment under the circumstances. How many Pinzgauers have you driven, 4 or 6 leggers ? It is THE most practical vehicle for me and the uses I put it to. I've previously owned LR's., a Haflinger, a 4x4 Pinz in the past as well. To repeat, the 6x6 is very practical indeed. Pleasing to the eye it is not, but I don't loose any sleep over that !

When you have owned Steyr-Daimler-Puch's continuously for nearly 36yrs I think I know what is practical and what is not.

No disrespects Alex, but enquire after the facts first and do your homework.

Just seen your 2nd post Alex (I type too slowly). Funnily enough I call in at a Sainsbury's en route to the bothy for a few day's grub. YES, that can be a barrel of laughs ! Sainsbury's seem to have slots that are about 6" narrower than ASDA's, Tesco's et al.

With no power steering, I'm the guy with biceps like Popeye at the checkout ! ha.ha.

Always keep the "Reserve Provisions" shelf ram-jam full in the winter just in case.

pp. I'll have a word with my bank manager and drive down to the boat soon. You can take the Pinz for a play if I can chug over that superb Froncysyllte(?) Viaduct in your floating palace.

A deal ??
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 2:48pm
If you'd seen where I live then you'd realise why I said I couldn't think of anything more impractical - for me, obviously! I didn't for one second think you lived in a 2 up, 2 down on the Woody wink

Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:01pm
It's a horses for courses sketch I guess Alex. I don't think the poor old Pinz would last 2 minutes on the Woody. (Oh Hell, sorry, I don't want to upset the folk who live there - I retract my comment rapido !) Gulp !

Dives behind (empty) sofa !

Yeah your on! Aquaduct, but there is a viaduct about two miles away that runs along side chirk aquaduct,so you can kill two birds with one stone!

Not much lasts long on the Woody! (Jokes, again, if you live there!) Hehe, well I'd love to see the Pinz in action, in fact I'm off to do some Googling.

My car won't even get off the driveway when it snows, as similar as chalk and cheese our cars are.

If you've plenty of time to spare, tap in "Pinzgauer" or "Pinzgauer 6x6" into Youtube. Enjoy !

I bet that in your car Alex, you can have a civilised conversation over the (little) noise of the engine. That's GOT to be worth a lot. Chriskay kindly gave me a pair of ear defenders to wear when I'm driving the Black Pig. Not sure about the legality of wearing them on the road but it saves me from getting the screaming habdabs on a decent run !
Posted By: _Ste_ Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:15pm
No Alex, having a heavy right foot has that effect in the snow with a 260bhp motor.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:28pm
The book power of the Pig is given in as 64kw (nasty foreign) which converts to .... wait for it.... 84hp DIN !!!!!!!

When you've finished with your engine Alex ............... A nice conversion job beckons. I'd probably be dead in a week !
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:32pm
There's no amount of right foot making my tin can on wheels go anywhere in the snow.

Is it that loud that you have to wear ear defenders? Brilliant. I've just been doing some Googling, I bet people think they are getting invaded when you turn up in that!

I'd love to have a look next time you're around, I'll drive over and check out PP's barge at the same time!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:39pm
Yes, it really IS that loud. Not the exhaust, just the box of thrashing bits that sits alongside the driver. Recommended Euro Regs for decibel limits. ha.ha.ha.ha.ha.ha.ha.ha. etc.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:42pm
So is yours the 712? Is that the only 6x6 they do?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Replacing the Pinz. - 26th Jul 2011 3:52pm
Yes. 712M with a metal body. Originally rag top "as built" but previous owner had it sent away to have a new body fitted. He did body recovery ... the stiff variety.... from lakes, reservoirs etc. that were too deep for plod divers. Plenty of space in the back for dive equip. Also had a pull-out stainless tray for the unfortunate person's last ride. I whipped that out pretty smartish. Kept the 3kw genny in.I "camp" in it quite a bit in the hills. It still has that certain "ambience" about it. When folks ask "What is THAT?". I quite truthfully tell them it's an off-road hearse ! They usually walk away scratching their heads ! All good fun !

Time to put the Nosebag on.
