HELP PLEASE
Hi any subaru experts or mechanics out there. my son just bought one scary repair bills .

How old is it, and whats the problem with it?

1999 turbo .son had it a year it's his babe ,he is only 22 so didnt want him to get it but had it nearly a year now washes it every weekend all wages spent on it glad he got it loves it .said he can hear noise in gearbox in 4th and 5 th gear i think will get him to reply to you soon.do you drive blue subaru .

what sort of noise is it?whining, crunching, just sounding like metal on metal? its hard to tell from here but it might be damaged cogs, syncromesh or selectors or it might be low on oil!

sound is a dry grinding very quiet noise only happens when accelerating in 4th and 5th gear sorry we not got back to you had probs

thats most prob down to worn gears it "should" be ok for now.. BUT it could fail loosing 4th an 5th. best thing to do is to change the gearbox oil for a decent one to try and postpone it!

put a racing oil in it, that'll sort it. the only way to fill the gearbox is through the dipstick tube. i have a home made filler which i made for our 2 subaru's, he can borrow it if he's stuck.

or

take it up to dyno demon in neston, say sean from cadscoobies recommended.

also tell your lad to join cads on www.cadscoobies.com loads of info on there, they're a friendly bunch too.

If the gear lever uses a linkage to the gearbox, the linkage may be out on the 'left' of the gearbox (meaning, it's not going into gear on 4/5). Or the synchro's are on their way out!
Does it do it over a certain speed?

checked it today the box is low on oil causing the rough sound but whilst driving in 5th if the gearstick gets pushed over a bit it sounds really rough grinding ... it needs a new clutch anyway so where getting the box out to recondition

it,s mica blue classic hope to be at next meet depends on gearbox getting sorted . just getting money togethere to get it done. what wheatsheaf pub is it beleive theres one in raby and one in neston? thanks lee

alright lee, it's the one in helsby. if you go on the cads website, the directions are on the meetings section. i won't be at the next one as i'm working unfortunately
