I'm expecting a compo pay out either this month or February from a crash from my first car, i've been unsure what to do for the last month or so. My insurance runs out on the 24th Jan

1 - Sell up (around £1300) and add it to the compo payout (around £2000) and move on to something bigger
£3100 maybe more which will need to include insurance

2 - Keep the spaxo and pay another year on insurance with the compo money and save the rest for when I sell up at the end of the year, bearing in mind it will be worth less at the end of the year and I wont have that much money saved

I really love my saxo but I don't want to be too late to get my money's worth and I want to start a new project

Car suggestions also welcome

Try getting some quotes on cars you think you may like - it will give you an idea if its affordable or not smile

Well apparently there are loads of bargains on second hand cars,
so while there so cheap, you may just do your self a favor and get a bargain.

Just mention the word credit crunch when going to buy one happy

aye, buyers market at the moment.

Personally, i would buy a car that is small engined and cheap to run and stick with it for a while then you should have enough money and ncb to buy a decent sport car when you are old enough to get reasonable insurance.

id go old school..like a 205 gti..for less cash..its quick and cheap to fix/do up and run...whilst giving you more power etc..you dont even have to go for a 1.9...a 1.6 tweaked is ALOT of fun....and then you will have the cash to do it up and insure it!

The 1.6 GTi was always the better option, even if a bit underpowered by todays standards, plenty of lift-off oversteer potential raftl

Personally mate, if I was in your situation, Id go for something a bit bigger. I had the Micra for 3 and a bit years, and was tired of driving a small underpowered car. I wont suggest getting an Alfa, but myabe something a bit different, with a boot. I cant suggest an actual car yet though, as I dunno what your tastes are. Focus maybe??
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 3:15pm
im willin to try any type of car

ive been looking at astra mk4's, focus', saxo vtr which are all around the same insurance which is the £1500 mark
Posted By: StuyMac Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 3:37pm
Mate rule out the Astra right here....

Between the Focus and Astra the Focus wins - hands down, everytime smile
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 3:39pm
Lol that may be so but I prefer the looks of the Astra but both of them are so hard to find a decent 3 door in

having "driven" both at work..I wholeheartedly agree with stu..Focus wins hands down.

I was using them as examples. I really hope you dont choose one of them, because then youll join the MILLIONS of other people on Britains roads who drive one. Its difficult to modify one, and still be different, as a lot of it has already been done before. Modifying is about being different.

How about a MKI Seat Leon ??
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 4:36pm
Not really into Seat leons, and yeah I want something different but insurance doesnt let me ;(

Cheers mate, i like the mg out of them

I also had a look on autotrader at the leons and there was only within 20 miles of here but not really into their looks

i'll do a quote on the mg now

EDIT:
Mg's out of my price range frown cheapest is £2k

pug 205 is calling!!!!!
Posted By: MGCraig Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 5:38pm
hmmmmm...

When I was lookin for a car, the MGs were all comin up between £1000 grand and £3000. Might just be a slump cos of the credit crunch.

Have you tried ebay?
Dont look for the classifieds, they always put the prices way way too high.
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 5:52pm
Yeah tried eBay none on their either lol
Posted By: Beemertastic Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 5:59pm
mg????...you wont be able to get parts for it...lol....
Posted By: MGCraig Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 6:03pm
Common myth. Loads of independant garages provide plenty of parts if ever needed. Plus, with MG on the brink of return, parts will be available eventually from the manufacturer.

That may actually be why they are more expensive now, with mG returning
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 6:04pm
Doesn't look like i'll be getting one anyway lol

As for the 205's not liking the look of them

VTR's, not many for sale atm either

Ahh boooo don't know what to do, i really cant stand driving a 1.0 for another year and I don't want the hastel of doing an engine swap
Posted By: MGCraig Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 6:15pm
what sort of car do you have in mind.

Small.
Family.
Luxury.
Fast, Slow etc?
Posted By: MrHouston Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 6:23pm
Any type, i'm open to try any car as long as the insurance isn't a joke mate
Posted By: Dave100e Re: What to do.. - 14th Jan 2009 6:36pm
Have you considered old cars? And i mean properly old.

If your prepared to live with a bit less reliability you can have a brilliant, characterfull, quick, easy to drive and CHEAP old car. Pre-73 cars dont pay tax. Insurance is dead cheap too. You have to look around for the quick stuff mind but theres plenty out there. And they not unreliable. Its a myth and its because they not looked after. In 2 years of classic cars ive only had one breakdown which was a coil.

My ford pop payed no tax, it had a 2.1 pinto, 5 speed box, could do 60 in the 7 seconds region and happily top 130mph using little fuel aswell. All mods declared (EVERYTHING, from paint to transmission and brakes) 20 with 1yr ncb £900.

If your not prepared to go that old, how about 80's stuff? XR3's, XR2's, Renault 5 GT Turbo's, citroen AX GT's, Golf GTi's, Nova's etc etc.
