Figures released by police forces showed that the number of breath tests rose from 145,867 during the 2006 Christmas period to 155,216 over the 2007 Christmas period.
But while there was moor tests in 2007, there was a dramatic fall in positive breath tests which went down from 9,658 in 2006 to 7,774 in 2007. The number of motorists failing the fit to drive tests designed to detect motorists under the influence of drugs also dropped from 666 to 550.
