WIRRAL families and motor enthusiasts alike are expected to turn out for this year's Birkenhead Festival of Transport.

The sixth annual event, organised by Birkenhead Lions, will see thousands flock to the town's iconic park over the weekend of September 13 to 14.

And organizers are looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic display with a full-sized replica of a Spitfire among the already confirmed.

Other attractions include military vehicles, a steam-powered boat on the lake, vintage fairground rides and classic cars.

There will also be a re-enactment of the Cheshire Regiment's First World War Field Hospital.

Ken Fretwell, chairman of the organising committee, said: "Our sixth anniversary show went well despite what the weather threw at us.

"On behalf of myself and the committee and the volunteers who put on the show through some very trying times, would like to thank you all for turning out in such great numbers to enjoy and support our show despite the weatherman's dire warnings which thankfully did not happen.

"This year's festival also features one of the biggest dog shows, I believe, Wirral has ever seen.

"Up until last year, funding came from the council, but this has now stopped. Fortunately we made enough from last year's event to ensure this year's event can go ahead.

We hope as many people come along to enjoy the show."
