On 26th January, new fine levels will come into force for certain offences. They mainly cover public places, licensed premises, railways, purchase of alcohol and tobacco products and offences that come under the Public Order Act.

I think that's the whole point - they don't WANT you to get drunk. If you get someone to buy your drink so you can get more drunk, they can get into trouble for it.

I have to say, I think you're pretty safe on this one - better things to do. The Police will just get you when you are outside and making a nuisance of yourself instead happy

To get you merry Craig, not to the point where you are passing out, making a nuisance or being violent.

I don't think the target is the likes of those that are nice drunks, it's more for the idiots that you see on the likes of the late night Police shows.

These laws have been in effect for many many years, and I don't think I have heard of one person being convicted for buying a drunk mate a drink - I could be wrong though.

Stuy - I don't know what you heard, but we were all sober and well behaved raftl

I'm wondering if that one is going to be strictly enforced or is it going to be confiscation and caution the first time i.e. will it be Officers' discretion think

If it's strictly enforced, is it going to be paid via the Mags or a FPO?? Can't find anything that says confused will have to do more digging.

All thse new penalties. should just go back to 10pm closing and no alcohol to be sold in shops or supermarkets after that same time of a night. Come back the good old 1950s.

I'm not sure it's the hours that need changing, I think it's the attitude that you have to get hammered to have a good time and the fact that people (mainly young males, but increasingly females) tend to get very "silly" when they have a skin full.

I rarely drink, and when I do, I tend to remember everything and do not get violent or "silly" (there are those that would say I'm silly to start with, not mentioning any names raftl ) Stuy, MissG, Scott et al. I get merry, but very very rarely drunk.

Unfortunately, neither the opening hours nor attitudes to drink look like they will change in the foreseeable future no
