My first car was a 1992 K reg Suzuki Samurai sport. I bought it for launching the boat my bro and I share. It came with the standard 1.3l Petrol engine. It had twin carbs so accelerated off the mark pretty well, and sounded good too.

I quickly got into the off roading game (What's the point in having a 4x4 if you're not gonna use it?!!). Soon I was hooked and the modding bug began, but not the kind of modding bug people usually get! laugh

This is my baby after a few minor mods, including front fogs, side steps, and bigger all terrain tyres:

And here's some more recent pics:

Forgot to mention the most recent mod, it's a nicely curved back door, after being pulled backwards into a tree on the end of a rope! Will pull one off a scrapper soon, but the other repairs to get it roadworthy again will come first. (Needs a new engine throwing in as this one's been drowned several times, and both axles have severe oil leaks! I have spares, so will get them fitted asap).
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 27th Oct 2004 3:44pm
Two more mods I've just remembered:

3/4" Wheel spacers
Plastic wing mirror glass (It bends rather than smashes when the jeep lands on it)
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 27th Oct 2004 4:43pm
Stripped interior (to be chequer plated in time)
Removed rear seats
Removable fibreglass hard top that I never use any more
Wide arches (to be fitted when I get time)
and not forgetting the removeable doors!

Finally got hold of an engine today, £50 from an ice cream man in Liverpool tease Just need a decent starter motor, then I can get in touch with a good mechanic friend of mine and see if he's up for the challenge of fitting it... along with the new axles <img border="0" alt="[cool / shades]" title="" src="graemlins/cwemotions067.gif" />
ive never really comented on ur car m8 so i will now!!!!!!its 1 wicked little jeep me jay and m8s have all had many a good time cruisin round abersoch in that little(well big now) jeep, but once he scared me 2 death wen i was on the side step on abersoch beach!!!!!wat can i say the birds seem 2 like it and that was b4 he did all that 2 it!!!!u got it fixed yet m8!!!get it down 2 wales 4 nxt yr m8!!!i shud b in my car aswell by then!!! happy
oh and GET THEM ARCHES ON!!!!!!its lookin damn good i fancy a jeep now!!!!i wanted that wicked vitara phat boy wat me and my dad did but hes sold it now!!!!! happy
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 5th Dec 2004 8:43pm
Well, got it back last week. Needs an mot but it needs some work to get it through, including new headlamp units and an axle seal. Got a new back door available but can't pick it up until the new year, then that'll need spraying (it's black at the mo!). Then it'll be back out cruising. Before the arches go on there's a few desperate off roading mods to be done to stop it from being killed again! All going well I *should* be able to bring it to the cnw comeback cruise! happy
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 19th Jan 2005 5:33pm
Geez! Just got it back after having the 4th, yes, FOURTH engine fitted! Stuck with the 1.7D again, last one had some serious internal probs. This one had been sitting for a while but once it was started sounded sweet and doesn't smoke either smile

Next mod is an under-bonnet one, will post a pic when it's done. Should be sweet. Other mods are to be some more (desperate) off roading bits and the arches. Still need to get it through the MOT before I can bring it out though! frown
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 8th Mar 2005 4:34pm
This came through the post today:

[Linked Image]

It's a chrome o/s motorbike wing mirror, gonna attach it to the top of the o/s front wing, then I'll legally be allowed to drive it on the roads with the doors off!

I've also still got these arches to go on which have now arrived through snail mail from the usa:
[Linked Image]

And there's that under-bonnet mod too, but before all these go on I *need* to sort out a snorkel so I don't kill this engine too!!

Didn't know that, learn Some thing everyday.

At least with the arches on, no one will knock the mirror off ?

Looking good jim,
and seeing her up close at the Rolling Road she's bigger than ever.

Post your BHP Graph, and RR pic in this topic Jim smile

I have more pics to send you too smile

Lol cheers webby.

Here she is at the rolling road day:

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Achieved 63.63bhp at the flywheel, not bad considering the engine only has 59 as standard. The only mod to the engine at the time was the induction cone, it's had a straight-through exhaust too but it failed the mot for being too loud frown Never mind, gonna make the main box removeable coz it's taking precious ground clearance away anyway, just swap them back for mot time smile

The standard 1.3 petrol engine has 64bhp so it's nice to know I've retained the power with the diesel conversion, just wish I knew how much increase in torque there was!

Well, wing mirror's on now, looks great without the doors!

It was in Peninsular 4x4 last week getting the loud exhaust back on, Martin's done a great job of making the two boxes interchangable. Now have a quiet one for road use and shows, and a loud one for the extra power off road. Pity I couldn't have the loud one on for the rolling road day!

Sounds like a good plan Jimbo. Is there a noticable difference between the two, say, 'performance wise?'
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 30th Mar 2005 11:23pm
Sorry, meant to say the loud one would be going on for shows, sounds awesome (I've had people asking me if I'd fitted a V8 to it smile ). It definately gives more of a kick with the straight through exhaust, shame I've gotta change them at all.

LATEST:

My bro's been busy with the welder recently, he decided to make a mounting point for the high-lift jack so we're never stuck without it. He also made use of his time by getting the snorkel fitted! I've also now fitted a set of 3 point sparco harnesses (thanks corsa john). On the lookout for a cheap set of cobra clubmans now smile
New rear tube bumper is being fabricated at the moment by the site sponsers "POR Fabrication".

Went off roading again the other day and decided to get some pics of the latest mods:

Just need to move the towbar up onto it and remove the old mounting.

Also sorted out a square rear number plate and fitted it and the light to the back door. Next is the wide arches (or so I keep telling myself), also in the pipeline are some buckets and a roll cage. Will have to wait until after the nationals though due to lack of funds smack

My "sensible 1.7 Diesel Astra" never breaks down, that's why you always see me in it! And I'm never gonna grow up, ever.

Gary, when I bought the jeep it wasn't the most reliable thing on the road, and due to work/college I never had the spare time to fix it when stuff went wrong. That's where my bro came in. I share it with him now as payment, which is actually pretty good coz we can share the cost of mods too!
m8 i cant beleve wat some ****er has done 2 ur boat!!!!!!hope u find out!!!!mike came up this weekend and told us!!!

And the new head unit:
[Linked Image]

Me and my bro have just worked out that this has parts taken from 7 different manufacturers! Including Suzuki (of course), Nissan, Vauxhall, Opel, Land Rover and Ford - the Ford parts had to be repaired before fitted though. The 7th one is some German motorbike manufacturer beginning with KR, can't remember what the name is though.

Been some time since I last updated this! Not much has changed, but it's spent a long time in sprayforce where Martin's been giving it some special attention. (Almost) all the rust has been eradicated from the arches and floor pan, and those arches have finally been fitted! My bro's done a bit of tidying to the final job and this is what she looks like now:

To hazard a guess I'd say around £6-7k, but I know a few ways to get an awesome road legal off roader which looks the part too for well under £2k. All you need to mod really is suspension, tyres, gearing and waterproofing for the most fun.

Got a CB radio fitted now with a big wonky ariel smile in blue of course. Looks like a beach buggy! Will get some more pics up soon.

Will do mate, just waiting on a new mod atm though so could be a short while coz it's out of use. Sent the transfer case (PTO) off to a mate who's juggling the gears inside it around a bit to give it super low gearing laugh Will be sooooo torque'y.

Spent some of the weekend building an install (not ice). It's for all the off roading gear so it doesn't go rolling round in the back all the time and knock someone out cold when we go over a big bump lol. Also got some rear lighting up now so we can always see where we're goin, whether it's forwards or backwards.
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 26th Nov 2005 7:31pm
Right, install's finished and now started fitting scoops old buckets in. They're cobra clubmans in black and silver, fit in very snugly. Should have them finished tomorrow smile
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 14th Dec 2005 9:15pm
Right let's see what's changed... buckets are in, harnesses are refitted, changed the side lights for oval tinted ones and moved them higher up, we've got vw beetle indicators to go on soon, and the plywood install is finished and is very tidy. But best of all the rock-crawler transfer case is finished and fitted, and makes it impossible to stall in low range. It's absolutely phenomenal!

And just realised I never posted up about the "fast/slow" switch that my brother has been developing! Basically it's a switch linked up to the excess fuel controller, so you need it to start the engine then switch it off and just use it for whenever the extra torque is needed (which is hardly ever now anyway lol)

Bad news is that on the test run after all of this we crumbled one of the rear leaf springs frown apparently ironman springs don't last much more than a year, and considering we drove off road in it more than on... well, you get the picture. New rear springs are on their way now, as is a new back door to finally replace the curved one happy
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 29th Jan 2006 11:33pm
Well, I can say now that it's been ages since i last went out in this, once in the last 4 months to be precise. It always seems to be the case that my bro does some work to it, takes it out to test it, then breaks something else. Then comes to me and says that he needs half the money to fix it (I'm already in debt). Then once it's fixed he'll take it out, test it, and break something else... you get the idea.

I'm not getting any time with this baby at all, so I've sold him my half.

Good news is I'm almost outta debt now because of it, so give it a couple of months and I can start the serious mods to the civic!

My bro promises I'll still get some use out of the jeep, but it's unlikely to ever be at another cruise. I'm gonna make sure this topic stays open so i can post up about anything my bro's doing to it. Infact there's a couple of things changed since my last post, including re-positioned parking lights which are oval with smoked lenses, and merc' G Wagen style front indicators. Looks smart and there's no lights in the bumper now so they're less likely to get damaged.

I'll try and get some more recent pics up during the week.
Posted By: jimbo4x4 Re: Jimbo's : Suzuki Samurai sport 4x4 - 15th Feb 2006 12:07am
Looks like i passed it on just in time! Coz since my last post, my bro has crashed into 3 trees! Broken the two supposedly unbreakable front wheel arches, which are very rare in the UK, bent the Twin tube steel front bumper, and mangled the o/s front wing.

Still, looks meaner now if anything! He's also done some mods to the front bumper to mount a winch which looks very smart. We went off roading at the weekend and promptly got stuck, which gave us chance to test it out. Got some pics too:

About 20 mins, tried hooking the winch onto some half buried concrete blocks which looked to be a good 1/4 ton in wieght, but ended up pulling down the bank they were buried in! Tried again with a railway sleeper that was just sticking out of the ground but it turned out to be rotten and we just snapped it. Finally tried with a tree (the cable only just reached), which got us out just as it was pulling out of the ground.
