Ok so as some of you may remember roughly 18 months ago i traded my Cali in for a family car (Ford Focus TDCi 100bhp 2004). Well times have changed and money has gone up so i can follow a dream once again.

So here it is in all it's glory.

Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 2:50pm
Yer, been a while since i attempted anything like this. sorry.
Posted By: Wheels Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 4:24pm
are they racing slicks ? tease
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 6:48pm
it's still not what you've wanted though is it mate

Glad to see you back in a sensible car wink
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 7:11pm
Damn joe caught me out, i did want a BMW 316 in white with white wheels. Don't suppose you know anyone who's selling one do you. got £2000 laying around burning a hole in my pocket. Only Joking.

Ok so maybe i do want a Scooby WRX or an Evo 3/4 but to be honest for the price i paid can't complain, plus i have got a soft spot for the Calibra.

So to cover, it's 2000cc 16v Ecotec, 136Bhp, standard (not for long), 17" AEZ alloys. M Reg (1995), Black, Oh and some amazing lexus light (please don't hurt me).

As said about more money now so can afford to fork out and get stuff done to it. so watch this space.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 8:08pm
ha ha just cas my car is better than yours tease

thought you wanted a red top?
Posted By: spinking Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 1st Jan 2008 8:22pm
Trusty.

The rear lights should easily give you a extra 100bhp raftl

Like these but its fwd.

Get that shite ECO lump out of there and get the 1/2 decent red top back in there though wink
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 2nd Jan 2008 9:36am
Stuy stuy stuy, would like to say yes sir, but just spent mega money getting it running again so can't be doing that. will just get some bits and bobs for the engine. cams, pulley's, flywheel.

in it more for the look of the car cos it's not in bad nick, some small rust spots not like the last rust bucket.
Posted By: lawton Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Jan 2008 3:20pm
nice one mate, the ecotec engine can be tuned up quite easily up to the power of a redtop wink
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 8th Jan 2008 9:37pm
Ok so while the car is lying outside doing nothing started to tidy it up a little with some cheap and cheerful touches, money is tight cos i bought it, so getting some spares off ebay.

whats the top thing?

You will hardly notice a difference with them bulbs if its not a HID kit. I got some for mine didnt even notice anything.

The top pic will be the things that sit above the seatbelt i think lol ? (Where you move it up and down)

i was looking into these today and was told aftermarket hid conversion kits unless used with automatic levelling and headlight washing systems cannot be approved/used on roads as they do not meet ECE regulations...

im sure that would be the case...however get the police to proove it is another thing!

on a side note..i changed my headlight bulbs to the phillips Xtreme ones...after a conclusion article in Auto express
(about 30 quid on ebay) and OMG are they good!!
Im used to proper xenons on the works cars..and the phillips bulbs are just as good on the audi if not better!
well worth spending your money on them rather than a very expensive HID kit!
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 9th Jan 2008 3:23pm
To be honest didn't expect them to be like a HID kit, bulbs are bulbs, calibra headlights are crap anyway.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 9th Jan 2008 3:27pm
HIDs are the way forward smile

Ive used 100W bulbs in the past, and they do offer an improvement over the std 55W jobbies.

However, Ive found the 100W ones (despite being nearly 100% more powerful) to only give 10-20% more light, hids are much closer to 100% more light than a std bulb smile
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 9th Jan 2008 7:11pm
Yeah, and they also glare other drivers. Think they should be illegal meself.

Anyone who cant see using standard bulbs, and needs HID kits and the like, really shouldnt be driving...

smile
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 10th Jan 2008 8:05am
Not all HID kits bleed light. It depends on the bulb, lense, and probably most importantly, the installer...

Any bulb fitted incorrectly will dazzle other drivers.

Theres a big difference between badly aimed lights, and lights that are bright - you can never have too much light in the dark, and adjusted to the correct angle, they wont effect oncoming cars smile

However, congrats on the cali, i always liked the look of them

Maybe on the very first kits, the lastest kits are now "E" Marked, so as long as the beam pattern is fine....

Right people enough off topic on my topic. i'm not getting HID.

I mean joe has them so i don't want them. will get angel eyes from america i think.

yup but its pointless modding a car unless its safe and legal...or the boys (or girls) in blue will just charge you even more money!

Ha ha no people should spamm the spam topics not mine, think i'll go sit in a corner and cry.

Only joking, everyone makes interesting reading, didn't know anything about HIDs just thought they where bright lights that expensive cars had

unusually, i, to an extent, agree with matt... was coming back home on the motorway the otherway, passed a few new bmw's, audis, range rovers etc... even if they arent directly pointing at u, they either look bright blue or far too bright for ur eyes to not become dictracted... and i wasn't even driving...

ok ok, been shopping on ebay again

here we go, car is 12 years old so as you can guess the leather gaiter and handbrake gaiter are a bit worn so got some black real leather replacements

[Linked Image]

Also bought a rear numberplate blanking panel. when i sold the last cali, got rid of my ABS (plastic) one which cost £70 new. so thought not paying and i have waiting like a good little boy and have now won a fibreglass replica for the grand sum of £100 and £10 postage.

Winner.

will mount the numberplate on the bumper, will have to get some lights for it !!!!!

Yer pomp will debadge the back. not changing it to an opel, not worth spending money on badges.

..:::MOT:::..

Fail.

Major work needed including welding and brake lines.

shocked
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 1:28pm
Gutted frown

Wheres the welding needed, and does it need many brake lines replacing?
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 1:36pm
was your mate in park that failed it. bummer.

welding is being done right now. floor pan on drivers side next to sill. hold the size of your fist. and the rear driver side arch is being glass fibre filled but not painted by the same guy.

Stuy mate it needs the whole front to rear lines and complete rear set up.

well gutted.

had a quote of £190 for the complete brake lines to be done. but might have to wait until next month now to pay that. not sure of it's good or bad price.

best get myself out and sell my body, wont get much but it will all help raftl
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 1:53pm
£190 doesnt sound too bad - theres a fair bit of labour there, depending on where the lines route....

Was in Neil or Bill that tested it? TBH If your brake lines are foobar'd (depending how bad they are) - be thankful you just have an MOT failure and not a brake pedal on the floor with traffic to stop for frown
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 1:58pm
there not right through but i'm sure they will be if not sorted asap.

is it something that i could do myself to save on labour ????

it was W E Haycock so i'm guessing Bill ???
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 2:00pm
Yeah, thats Bill smile

You need a special tool to flare the ends of the lines matey, and if your doing the lines the full length of the car, Ideally you want it up in the air on a ramp as the pipes ideally need to be one piece.

Brakes also aint something you can afford to get wrong... frown
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 2:06pm
how much fun would it be staping back from a job well done and they don't work and the car rolls of the ramp.

Ha ha ha ha.

i know what you mean. can you no corrosive pipes?? that would be a god send.

i can get copper fuel lines of clubcalibra.net but nothing about brake lines

Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 2:09pm
yes Garages normally replace them with copper pipes smile
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 28th Jan 2008 3:11pm
Oh yes, on the plus side.

discovered my car has got an alarm. my dad tried to open the boot and set it off.

VauxCareWirral to the rescue. ALL brake lines front, back and front to back, CV joint replacement and handbrake tightening.

£150.00 all in so will be booking it in some time this week. small electrical jobs will be sorted myself this week aswell.

Well what a fun day today has been.

fixed all the little problems that it failed it's MOT on and discovered there is some stuff i just can't do so garage will have to sort it, to cold to get under the car (wimp i know)

Fitted my indicator lens so don't stand out now like big orange nipples, and fitted a radio (cheap one for now) and discovered the passenger front speaker doesn't work.

Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 29th Jan 2008 7:46pm
car is booked in for monday, earliest they could get me in for the brakes to be done, so will lose a few days on the Tax, oh well.

Ebay has just taken another battering.

put my lights on yesterday, and some of the bulbs behind the dials had blown so ordered a new set, also car didn't come with locking wheel nuts on the alloys so a nice shine new set are on there way to me right now.

will it has already got white dials, they changed them to white from black in 1994 when they changed from redtop to ecotec engines.

the lights should be on the shopping list for next month but it was going to be a surprise but you burst my bubble LOL.

Not really a big fan of the high level spoilers. might get a scooby spoiler and fit that.

tinting the windees? gangstercali?

An example picture, not exactly what the finished product will look like. Debadged that ugly looking vauxhall badge smile
and put them rear black lights on then tint windows.

thing is pomp wrong lights.

The ones i've won are standard lights and also the recess the numberplate is in will be filled black and the numberplate is being repositioned low on the bumper.

cheers for doing that though, looks quite good. loving the tint.

I am keeping out of the headlight thing, what with mine being designed to dazzle with the wig wags and strobes needed on it to get places quickly and move people over i best say sod all.

P.S it had HiD xenons, sorry had to just to keep this going lol
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 5th Feb 2008 12:27pm
Well it's in getting the brakes done.

been in 2 days now, just rang for an update, and the plate that the handbrake return spring is connected to is corroded so they are trying to find another. it just gets worse and worse.

think the car had been standing for some time for this much corrosion.

cry
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Dazzz - 2.0l 16v Calibra - 5th Feb 2008 12:41pm
gutted mate. it gunna cost you much more?
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 1:02pm
Don't know mate, depends if they can even get the plates they need, if not they will have to be fabricated and welded and VCW don't do welding.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 2:30pm
I can do welding not a very good job though haha
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 2:53pm
It's the rear brakes backing plates that are screwed. falling and flaking apart, specialist job they VCW have never done and don't want to risk it.

So there rebuilding the rear brakes and i have to find somewhere to do the backing plates before they will do the brake lines.

Bloody money this car is costing, it's becoming a project not a run around.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 3:00pm
Gutted matey, any chance of getting used items from another scrapper?
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 3:12pm
Just done some ringing round, one garage is going to ask if any of there staff fancy having a go, and can use parts from another scrap one they have on site.

looks like it's going to be a bloody big job as you have to strip the hub and everything.

Where is stationmeik when you need him !!!!!
Posted By: vw_kyle Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 7:44pm
what do you need making cali im a time served fabricator and welder
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 5th Feb 2008 10:33pm
it's ok cheer kyle, i can buy the part i need, just need someone to fit it, which all vauxhall garages are saying is a pig to do.
Posted By: placidmaster Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 6th Feb 2008 5:25am
cant u go thru 1st choice spares . com (google it) and have them do the leg work, get two complete second hand hubs sent to your door on the good old mastercard, ideal as it has el scrapoes from all the uk linked up, and u just type in what u want and get them to text prices from various scrappies and they send u the price and it includes next (working) day delivery. hope this helps and ps, car is looking rather blingalicious my son!!

Well it look's like it might need a complete new rear end. everything is rusted solid. Teailing arms, dampers, hubs, backing plates, brake shoes brackets.

It's a mess under there, scared to touch anything incase it crumbles away to dust.
Posted By: Pomp Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 3:21pm
Sell it an get this...

pomp it's an 8v, not enough power to pull you out of bed plus it's on wheel trims, original spec 8v calibra.

thinking if it can't be fixed, strip it and get a bloody corsa.

Please note - The car is listed as ‘cat C’ and will need a VIC check, (£36) easy process, before the log book is issued (free of charge). You will need to re Mot and Tax the car.
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 3:34pm
thats my problem no tax and no MOT.

I've put about £1000 all told into this car. including getting it home and buying it.

will have to spend a lot more getting ti right. should i get someone to do the engine transplant into a corsa ?

I just don't know what to do now.

Nova all the way smile
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 3:42pm
Screw that, im not paying to get the engine bay seam welded, uprated prop and drive shafts.

Or i could just buy a cavalier ???
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 3:45pm
If it cant be fixed why don't you just buy a cheap Cali 8v that has a fooked engine and put your 16v engine and wheels etc etc on it ?
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 3:57pm
I was going to do that with a corsa or tigra.

Been looking at cavalier GSI's

is nice that one sean but not going to have that sort of cash for a while now.

maybe an SRI with a redtop fitted ???
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 5:00pm
Yeah i know mate but just had a little look lol, Why not get a smaller one as an SRI will still be highish insure so if you get like a 1.8 with a redtop then its better, But it depends if you want the inside trim etc etc smile

Get a carlton tease
Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Dazzz - New Motor - 7th Feb 2008 5:32pm
they only do redtop as a 2000cc engine mate, 150bhp.

carlton, you mad.
rather an omega.

ok so just been talking to my dad, gonna see if we can strip the rear trailing arms and replace with some from a written off car in a scrap yard. hopefully they will be in better condition than mine and use them to rebuild the rear end.

and joe this isn't one thing i'm going to be doing a how to guide on.
