Very Very Nice mate.

Very Nice indeed.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 25th Feb 2007 10:54pm
As I said in the other thread, its beautiful and looks mint. Has a very streamlined look to it as well. Not sure what it is about the alloy's but they seem to go really well with the car.

i saw this yesterday parked out side fred perry in the out let village, it very nice bud, but i ain t too keen on the barry spoiler. are you going to put pigger rims on it, i recon a nice set of white wheels would go down a treat
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th Feb 2007 10:52am
The spoiler look's very big in the pics but it looks ok in person. it will be staying for now, plus I like to think it is keeping the car in the right direction. im still gettin used to the change from fwd to rwd.

I found perfect white with chrome lipped rims on ebay, but like i said, mods will come in 6months time.
Posted By: Rich Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th Feb 2007 1:56pm
What power should you be getting with these mods? I know a few S3's using this turbo setup with about 350ish bhp.

250-260bhp

Has it got the LSD, the late interior, and bigger brakes?

"J" was the changeover year, and despite it having the new front bumper, not all cars had all the new bits...
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th Feb 2007 2:23pm
im not 100% sure mate. I'll take pics of the bits then i got a chance and see what you make of them. i took her for a spin last night and took it easy but still the rear end drifted out.

Think im right in saying, jack the rear of the car up,and trn one wheel by hand,if the opoosite wheel just sits there u dont have an LSD?? if it moves then u do (i think it'll move slower than the wheel ur making turn?

Don't think thats right scoop, If i turn my back wheel, the other turns in the opposite direction, and mine doesnt have an LSD.

I think it's if you turn one wheel and the other turns in the same direction at the same speed?

Thats right; turn one wheel and if the other wheel turns in same direction then it has the lsd...this does not work, however, for cars with viscous type LSDs such as Carlton GSi, Sierra xr4x4 etc

Sounds good to me! i could do with getting some spare wheels first to practice on. getting it sideways is easy. making some sort of control is harder than i thought think
Posted By: red20 Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 5th Mar 2007 6:45pm
i wudnt worry about spare wheals to be honest.
its easy to get it sideways the hard part it cuming out of a drift an bk into a st8 line with out the back end going all over the place. but with practice you will get the hang of it .some of the people of here have saw how well i have lernt in the short period of time i have bin learning

not sure what the offset and PCD of 200sx's are but i've got a set of 15 inch alloys that i want to get rid of. two are painted black and two white. the tyres are still really good. the are 38 offset and 4x100/4x108 (multifit) if they are any use to you as practice wheels or somethin give me a shout.

below you see the wiper how it was and above 1 that was sanded down

job cost £10
you may think 'why post this? its not much!'... but simple answer is that I have never done this kind of stuff before, i didn't know about priming and spraying. I always pay someone else to do it. but i feel a sense of accomplishment now and take pride grin

Fair play to ya Mr Whelan. Typical problem with the S13s, and I had to do it with mine when I got it as the paint just flakes off them frown

Another common problem is that they start squeeking as well - theres a really easy fix for that too, but Ill elt ya suss it out if and when ya need to wink

TELL ME TELL ME AS MINE DO IT.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 11th Mar 2007 12:33pm
If you remove the whole arm where it attaches to the scuttle panel, there is a rubber bush which sits between the motor mech and the actual arm (under the splines) These rubbers bushes get rusty from the arm and wiper mech. Use some fine sandpaper to clean the bush of rust, and lightly grease - re-assemble and squeeking stopped.

Some WD40 on the mech pivot points is also a good idea smile

ran a few test today cos i bought the car with a problem and i want to get it sorted.

the problem is that the car smokes when on boost. Found out i need a new piston ring. been all over the wirral today getting prices.

£260 is the cheapest, thats 4 pistons and rings. then was quoted
£1000 to get them fitted!... I will be doing this myself & with my uncle next month when i have holidays from work.

anyone got any ideas or thought's on this.
Posted By: Sanchez Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 19th Mar 2007 9:49pm
not an expert, but make sure you skim that head, im sure chewy can shed some light on this matter for you, hopefully the head has never been skimmed before !
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 19th Mar 2007 11:32pm
I'm not an expert either, but i'd agree with Sanchez.

It'll still be quite costly, but nowhere near as much as you got quoted.

Don't forget you will also have the cost of new gasket(s), possibly timing tools & cost of skimming. Make sure a reputable company does it if you do need to get it done.

I'm replacing the head gasket on my car myself to save labour costs (not as hard as replacing pistons and rings though)

Just make sure you're both confident enough and capable and have enough knowledge and tools. You can never have enough tools. smile
Posted By: Mark Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 19th Mar 2007 11:58pm
Well i am an expert liar

Are the parts generally expensive?
And like everyone else says "Ask Stuy"

There could be a hell of a lot of labour involved,
but what do i know, i just like your day tip video's smile

hmmm its the gasket, soz dude
Posted By: Johnny Alan Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 20th Mar 2007 11:25pm
If its white its usually water eg head gasket but it could be cause its cold or moisture in the exhaust, blue is normally oil which could mean the turbo(more than likely this). Black is fuel normally when overfueling see alot of diesel turbo throwing this out. Sound alot of money for a rings and piston to be fitted, I would have thought you could get forged and fitted for that. I would get a compresion test done before going any further but my money is with the turbo.

deffo not turbo due to no smoke when the revs are dropping, also turbo smoke is mostley white.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 21st Mar 2007 10:59pm
Check for oil in the breather system, its a common problem that when you fit a decat an exhaust to a facelift (cat'd car) that they start breathing heavy and throwing oil back in to the inlet.

....a simple catch can breather system could fix this....
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 21st Mar 2007 11:21pm
but its a 1992 model, it was made without a cat anyway?.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 22nd Mar 2007 11:17am
Does it have a lambda (o2) sensor in the dump pipe?

Also, dont rule out the turbo, they can smoke on boost an not on idle in there early stages of failure (dependant on which seal has gone)
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 22nd Mar 2007 10:12pm
I really dont know mate. frown
Posted By: Mark Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Mar 2007 10:11am
Further investigation is necessary as it does look like
oil into the system somewhere?

A simple compression test as Rhys mentioned will clear
that one up for you.

That would also let you know what the other cylinders are like?
As in there fine but compression is down.

Does it seem to be driving Lumpy or Sluggish as i doesn't
sound like it?

Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Mar 2007 11:55am
Remove an intercooler pipe and see if there is much oil in it - if there is its just breathing heavily - a breather system will fix it smile
Posted By: _Ste_ Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Mar 2007 11:14pm
boss car and video m8, shame about the head unit wink

What software did you use to do the vid m8?
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Mar 2007 11:22pm
It's pretty easy to spot a lambda sensor usually, just have a look. If in doubt, check SXOC or similar to search for a reference picture/description of where it would be located.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 24th Mar 2007 11:26am
Its on the pipe that comes out of the back of the turbo - its an electrical plug - approx 2" long, really easy to spot smile

If it turns out to be the turbo, gimmie a shout - Im a bit of a dab hand at turbo swaps wink

Also, Make sure you buy a decent turbo and not a cheap crappy item (Decent GT28 Turbos are around the £5-600 mark, cheap ones are less than £200)

i did this. there was small amount of oil in the pipes. started the car up and reved to 3.5k and no oil came out. so that seems ok. all oil pipes breath ok too.

im taking the engine apart next month (when i have holidays from work) and will post up my findings.

mines is a Garrett GT28 smile not a cheapo one. so if it is the turbo a recon would be better(cheaper) wouldnt it?.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th Mar 2007 10:53am
Are you stripping the motor because of this, or to recon it / fit new pistons etc?

If its for this it really isnt worth it yet mate....

The car wont run and rev with an intercooler pipe off, are you sure you checked the right one?

The turbo wont produce enough +ve boost at a standstill to blow oil through the breathers or oil seals.

It could be as simple as some hose and a catch can mate, £30 worth maybe.
If yours is a Decatted car (Which Im pretty sure it is) this breathing is a common problem (Check the SXOC) - some fit breather systems, some fit one way valves to stop the smoke....

As for the turbo, I know you have a decent one already mate, just didnt want you to be tempted by the cheap ones rather than recon / replace the one you have. personally I dont trust recon turbos, they just dont last like new ones plus a decent recon will cost upwards of £300.

Whats the spec of the turbo matey? A/R's, Blade trims etc?
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th Mar 2007 11:18am
this is all i know.

Gt28rs turbo (Less than 2000miles covered) with HKS adjustable actuator.

The turbo is a Garrett aka Air research its a "GT28RS" rollerbearing turbo

info pulled from PM's before i bought the car.

Whelan - I was behind you through west kirby the other day, and that smoke problem looks a lot like breathers mate - very rich and light oil.

Put my black alloys on the rears today t try em out.

[Linked Image]

they fit well and are very very very slippy in todays wet weather.

I really need to start sorting the engine out now instead of buying shiny things.

no not yet frown ive got to choose a point when im gonna rebuild the engine and i'll order the new lights. just bought a new bike to get to work BUT ive just been suspended from work frown

things to do:

New pistons & rings
big ends
new fixed lights
fix the far side rear disc brake

im sure there is more but i just cant remember at the mo.

i have a likkle video to post too just uploading now so watch this space.
Posted By: Sanchez Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 22nd Apr 2007 8:37pm
off topic like, but how the hell did you get suspended from work
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Apr 2007 7:23am
If your rebuilding the motor matey, fit a new oil pump, water pump, cam belt, tensioner, check the crank, renew the mains, fit a better head gasket (especially if you want to play with the boost), renew all turbo / manifold gaskets, its also a good idea to get the block honed if your renewing the rings smile
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 23rd Apr 2007 2:57pm
cheers for the info stuy

ive got all my gaskets now but will order a better head gasket rather than the on i have at the mo.

Wiseco pistons will be ordered soon as i get the £400 but the tax is up too frown

its all going on the shopping list. i need more parts than i have money at the moment tho frown

[Linked Image]

and all my gaskets for the rebuild

[Linked Image]

not the best parts but they will do me on a limited budget.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 28th Apr 2007 11:02am
Looks great thumbsup

Very shiney lol

I prefer the black alloys myself

That looks a git of a job sorting the boost gauge out.

When you hoping to the rebuild?

Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 28th Apr 2007 11:16am
the boost gauge is easy, its just that i want to mount it into the centre vents BUT im trying to make a holder for it and i keep snapping the plastic that im using.

(im gonna buy one of ebay instead) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nissan-200SX-...681QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

just one problem! i have £16.57p on my paypal and it costs £17 haha gutted and its gonna take 12days for the 43p to transfar from my bank account doh

im saving for my pistons so its gonna be a month an a bit before i get them. im guessing about 2months off starting the rebuild properly as im super skint.(just remembered car tax is up this month) frown 200sx life is expensive lol

allot of people said they prefere the black alloys?? i like the old skool look of the others. i might put them up on ebay to see what i can get towards the rebuild. any ideas on how much i should sell for? they all have exellent tred and minor scuffing.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 28th Apr 2007 11:21am
lol gutted. That gauge panel would look sweet.

Whats the time scale you have for the rebuild?

Not really got an idea on the price that they'd go for to be honest, best to look on ebay yourself and see how much they are going for?

Any bit extra money helps lol

Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 28th Apr 2007 11:54am
well im going to be riding to work (bicycle) when its being done so ide like to get it done asap. but it aint going to be easy with the crappy tools that i have. plus my uncle is supposed to be helping (he's a mechanic) so it depends on whats he is doing during the weekends.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 28th Apr 2007 12:04pm
lol it's horrible without a car.

I have to ride too, to get to my garage.

It'll take a lot longer than you think if you're only working on it at weekends - Thats the only time I can work on mine.

Bit of advice - you can never have enough tools. No matter how many different sizes, lengths, settings, types of tools you have, you will always find you'll need more especially doing a job like you're doing.

If you ever need to borrow any tools, I'm sure I can lend you some of mine. I've built up quite a collection now lol

Gutting about the hole matey frown

Unfortunatly, the S13's can get it bad frown

At least you have nipped it before it got terminal...

Maybe worth a little look on the rear chassis legs, back of the sills, suspension turrets and subframe mounts to make sure nothing it taking to rot there frown
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 14th May 2007 12:42pm
yeh stuy i checked all over after noticing that hole and it looks ok.

some of the bush's need replacing as they are starting to erode a bit. might invest in new roll bars too. there is allot that i would love to do to the car but as usual its all down to £££ frown
Posted By: Wheels Re: Whelan Nissan 200sx Gt28rs - 26th May 2007 8:43pm
well guess were i have been today?

[Linked Image]

yup in the garage AGAIN. i went and got a second hand gearbox from a pre-face lift model from a place in wales. so set to work fitting it.

below is a picture of the sump plug. so much metal? it has only been driven to work the odd time so it shows how bad the box was because its only been 2 weeks since i changed the oil.

[Linked Image]

have a look at my oil! lovely metallic colour now smile

[Linked Image]

so much metal destroyed into fine piece's that it now looks gold!!!!!

cleaned up the new box and swapped the speedo parts over as the pre facelift gearboxes use a different connector for the wiring.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

all fitted. just needs the zorst fitted and straightened.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

fixed up zorst smile

[Linked Image]

oh well all in a days life of 200sx ownership smile

things to do:

buy n fit new anti roll bars.
buy n fit duel headlights (still).
buy n fit oil catch tank.
buy n fit new braided turbo hoses (found a leak today)
buy n fit new pneumatic clutch thingymajigga
and god knows what else frown

pics look ok. they were taken with my nokia N95 that im well chuffed with.it can do better but my hands were covered in oil and my uncle was seeing his are with me wanting to take pics rather than do work smile haha

more eye candy
