I did a sponsored walk along the length of the Wirral Way (12 miles) and then did the coastal walk round to Seacombe which I think is another 10 miles. Started at 11pm and finished at around 5am proper beasted it and felt it for around a week after. Recommend it, especially at night in the Summer as you see the morning mist and sun rising!

http://www.creativeconcern.com/newlands/bidstonmoss_files.phpAccess to the reserve is limited to pedestrians only. There are two stiles - one near to the Bidston Railway Station and the other near to the A554. The nearest car park is at Bidston Railway Station. Visitors may gain access at any time but there are no facilities at the reserve.
Nordik Skiiing (which is suited to the steep terrain of Bidston’s ‘mound’).
The site is now even more accessible for local communities, thanks to the addition of the footbridge over the mainline railway, whilst one of the main entrances to Bidston Moss remains within the Mersey Waste Disposal Authority plant, meaning that it has become an integral part of the Authority’s educational and community programme.
Bidston Moss remains popular with local people for informal use like dog walking, exercise and family days out (the site is one of the few with views to the coast, which makes it a popular choice for many. However, a number of community events have been held on site including fun runs and family open days. These have helped to introduce local people to their new community woodland.
In 2007, Bidston Moss became the home for the world’s first Green Billboard. This is a living structure of willow trees stretching over 20 metres, onto which a message board is mounted. Located on the edge of the site and close to a main road, the billboard is a great way to promote an environmental message, and raise awareness of Bidston Moss at the same time.

you can also park at the tip gang
The tip?.
I wont be leaving the car at Bidston station thats for sure. I might walk over from Tescos or B&Q.
Aint leaving my car in the tip, no way. Tennis Centre would be okay, also if you are thinking B&Q, then the MFI car park is quite good, they have one around the front and around the back.
Front may be more secure.
Thanks MattLFC. I have had enough of the car getting vandalised for the time being.

any car left at tip are safe as houses i can asure you of that.
Im not sure where you mean by the tip. The tip by me is a place with skips that you only go to to dump your rubbish and leave. You would not and cannot leave cars there.
you can park in car park by main office got cctv manned 24/7
Bidston Moss New public footpath at the side of the tip
There are construction vehicles passing through the tip out of the back door and onto Bidston Moss they go towards the flyover to work underneath so in theory you could walk straight out of the tip back gate

Storeton woods is in 2 parts; the part between Marsh Lane & Rest Hill Rd. is owned by the Woodland Trust & is looked after by the Friends of Storeton Woods. The other part, from Rest Hill Rd. to Mount Rd. is called Hancock's Wood & is still owned by the Leverhulme Estate. This wood is not maintained & is a bit of a mess. The main feature of the woods is that there were quarries there, both in the first wood. You can just make out where the edge was, near the Mount Rd. wall & the remains of the Great Cutting, which the tramway ran through, can still be seen. Also, the embankment the tramway ran along is clear; it's now a main path through the woods. There's a preserved section of rail where the embankment ends & the line entered the cutting. The rails were second hand & originally used on the Liverpool & Manchester line. The main quarry, which was up to 80Ft. deep, was filled with the spoil from the first Mersey road tunnel in the late 1920's. When I was a kid you could still see the rails crossing Rest Hill Rd. On the ground, it's not easy to see where the quarry was, but from the air, you can see it; it's the long, narrow bit where there are fewer trees, opposite Mill Rd.
web site map (hope that link works). Edit: OK, the link's not clickable, but you can copy & paste.
The best place to park would be on Marsh Lane as there's quite a bit of verge there. It can get busy; the woods are popular with dog walkers.
I'm hoping to be able to join you for at least some of the walk.
Cheers, Chris. nice one chris mate!

Nice one. Thanks for the info chris

Yer-id like to see the stone memorial if we can find it!
Not that I've seen it, but I understand the memorial is on the North Cheshire Trading Estate. Perhaps someone could organise a trip to find & photograph it. It doesn't really fit in with Storeton woods.

I have young kids that have to be organised as minded before I can go off on a stroll. Would love to join the walks, my kids are interested too but need to find them homes for a few hours so they don`t upset peeps by joining in.
If the kids can walk they can come. TC brings his kids and they love it. Don't they????
Yes Tc's kids do love it, No reason why you can't bring your kids?
I am taking my son on a few wiki walks,
Good exercise for them.
Yep, the Wiki walks arnt a hurried affair, we just take our time and enjoy the scenery and things to see etc, so no worries about how old you are or how fit you are etc, everyone is more than welcome!!
Nice one, thought my kids might have been a problem even tho they can`t wait to join wikki. (1 has 2 to go)
I'll bring the cattle prod!!

Thanks for the thought
What's parking like near the pub? (that's why I thought of Marsh Lane in the first place).
never noticed a pub car park
but you have the main road, a road alongside the pub and is it Rest Hill lane across the other side of the main road opposite the pub
In there a few months ago and there were quite a few people in having meals
there is always the car park of the george, its only down the road.

marsh lane 12noon it is then
Hi, I'm not feeling to good ATM & probably won't be up on Sunday. Here's a couple of maps of the woods from the Storeton Tramway book I have. If you start from the bottom entrance on Marsh Lane & follow the obvious path you'll come to a big oak tree with the lower branch cut off. Just near here is the preserved section of rail from the tramway. If you look uphill, you can make out the remains of the Great Cutting & if you walk up towards Mount Rd. you'll find the edge of the old filled in quarry; it can be difficult to spot but the map may help. Have fun.
Cheers, Chris.
see you there gang on sunday

I printed both the old maps off and left without them. Doh!
Derek. Woods+ forests are differentiated by 'canopy coverage'. Woods have a more open canopy coverage wheras in forests the trees are closer together thus there is canopy coverage. So there ya go, got this from wikipedia.

Trans and Kevin: Thanks for the rail pics. Best close-ups I've seen! It's hard to believe those actual pieces would have carried the earliest trains on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, 1830-35. They were replaced on the L & M by more sustantial rail when the L & M carried heavier loads. But they proved adequate for transporting the stone blocks to Bromborough Port Stone Quay until 1905 when the line closed!
It's amazing you can still touch this important railway archaeology in its original position! (Some of it is preserved elsewhere, though.)
Read the full fascinating story in 'The Storeton Tramway' by R.C.Jermy.

Thanks bud! will look out for a copy of that! Kev fantastic pics mate!
any old pics around of tunnel please
Here's a couple from the book "The Storeton Tramway" by R.C.Jermy. The thing to note from the plan (from the same book) is that the tunnel was not just under the road, but was about 60 yards long & was approached through a cutting. This cutting has long been filled in. During the war, the tunnel was used as an air raid shelter. I don't know whether the tunnel was filled in, or collapsed; certainly I remember as a child that you could just about get in from the woods, but the Eastern end was blocked. From the pictures, it's clear that the top of the tunnel was at least 10Ft. below the level of the road, so what you wondered might be the arch is too high, although in about the right place.
Cheers, Chris.
Thanks for the info chriskay. No wonder we could not find the tunnel.

History eastham
Eastham is cited as one of the oldest villages on the Wirral Peninsula and has been inhabited since Anglo Saxon times. The name derives from its location: ham ("home") situated to the east of Willaston, which was then the principal settlement.[3] The original village is clustered around St. Mary's church, whose churchyard contains an ancient yew. Much of the surrounding land was once owned by the powerful Stanley family.
Since the Middle Ages, a ferry service operated across the River Mersey between Eastham and Liverpool, the early ferries being run by monks from the Abbey of St. Werburgh. By the late 1700s, up to 40 coaches each day arrived at a newly built pier, carrying passengers and goods for the ferry. Paddle steamers were introduced in 1816 to replace the sailboats, but the demand for a service declined in the 1840s with the opening of a railway link between Chester and Birkenhead Woodside Ferry. In 1846, the owner of the ferry, Thomas Stanley, built the Eastham Ferry Hotel and shortly after, the Pleasure Gardens were added to attract more visitors. The gardens were landscaped with rhododendrons, azaleas, ornamental trees and fountains. Attractions included a zoo, with bears, lions, monkeys and antelope, an open air stage, tea rooms, bandstand, ballroom, boating lake, water chute and a loop-the loop roller coaster.
Entertainers performed in the gardens during summer, and included Blondin, the famous tight-rope walker who once wheeled a local boy across a high wire in a wheelbarrow. In 1894, the Manchester Ship Canal was opened by Queen Victoria, bringing added prosperity to the area and a Jubilee Arch was built at the entrance to the Pleasure Gardens in 1897 to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee.
The 'Bear Pit' at Eastham Woodland & Country Park as it stood in 2006.
In 1854 the American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, whilst in the position of United States consul in Liverpool, visited Eastham and declared it to be: "the finest old English village I have seen, with many antique houses, and with altogether a rural and picturesque aspect, unlike anything in America, and yet possessing a familiar look, as if it were something I had dreamed about.
In its heyday Eastham Ferry was known as the 'Richmond of the Mersey', but its popularity declined during the 1920s and the last paddle steamer crossing took place in 1929. The Pleasure Gardens fell into disrepair during the 1930s and the iron pier and Jubilee Arch were later dismantled. In 1970, to commemorate European Conservation Year, the area was designated a Woodland & Country Park and today, it is once more a popular place of recreation.

ANYONE ELSE COMING? HISTORYIn 1887, Lever began looking for a new site on which he could expand his soap-making business, at that time based in Warrington. He purchased 56 acres (230,000 m2) of unused marshy land at the site which became Port Sunlight, which was relatively flat, allowed space for expansion, and had a prime location between the River Mersey and a railway line.
The garden village was founded to house his factory workers. Lever personally helped to plan the village, and employed nearly thirty different architects. Between 1899 and 1914, 800 houses with a population of 3,500 were built, together with allotments and public buildings including the Lady Lever Art Gallery, a cottage hospital, schools, a concert hall, open air swimming pool, church, and a temperance hotel. He also introduced schemes for welfare, education and the entertainment of his workers, and encouraged recreation and organisations which promoted art, literature, science or music.
Lever's stated aims were "to socialise and Christianise business relations and get back to that close family brotherhood that existed in the good old days of hand labour." He claimed that Port Sunlight was an exercise in profit sharing, but rather than share profits directly, he invested them in the village. He said, "It would not do you much good if you send it down your throats in the form of bottles of whisky, bags of sweets, or fat geese at Christmas. On the other hand, if you leave the money with me, I shall use it to provide for you everything that makes life pleasant – nice houses, comfortable homes, and healthy recreation."[5]
The historical significance of Port Sunlight lies in its unprecedented combination of model industrial housing, providing materially decent conditions for working people, with the architectural and landscape values of the garden suburb, influenced by the ideas of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Each block of houses was designed by a different architect. The backs of any of the houses cannot be seen, and each house is unique. In terms of architectural features, there is half-timbering, carved woodwork and masonry, pargetting (ornamental plaster work) moulded and twisted chimneys and leaded glazed patterns. Some houses were built in Flemish style, with bricks imported from Belgium.
Yes why not.

I love it with the daffodils and cherry blossom.
I did the Art Gallery about 3 years ago and it was still free then. You need a couple of hours for that so we'll do it another time when the weather isn't great.
Thanks for all the pics. Good to meet you all; sorry I couldn't stay but I had a lot to fit into a short time. I just wish I didn't live 55 miles away.

The War memorial, unveiled in 1921, was desighned by Sir William Boscombe John, and stands on the site of port sunlights old gymnasium. It is a unique and dramatic representation of the sufferings of the whole of society. the centrepiece, a large granite cross, is surrounded by eleven bronze figures symolizing the defence of the home. The circular parapet surrounding the cross has two bronze panels on either side of the four flights of steps, which depict children presenting floral garlands in tokens of gratitude. there are four more bronze panels set between these, representing sea, land, air forces and the Red Cross. Inscribed in stone around the rim of the parapet is "Their names shall remain and forever their glory shall not be blotted out".
Dell Bridge.
This is one of many fine examples of public amenity open space in Port Sunlight. Dell Bridge was built in 1894 to span what was once the upper reaches of Dell Creek, a former tidal creek that once divided the village in half.
It was drained and landscaped and now forms a lovely green ribbon through Port Sunlight.
The Bowling Greens.
Lever employed thirty different architects to create Port Sunlights unique style. Not only was he an avid believer in property sharing, but he also believed that the well being of the community went hand- in- handwith its success. To try and maximise this belief he introduced many schemes for the welfare, education and entertainment of his workers. the bowling greens were just one example.
Hulme Hall
Construction of Hulme hall began on 5th march 1900 and it was opened on 29 july 1901. It was built to serve as the womens dining hall and could seat almost two thousand people. During the evening it doubled as the village hall. During the Great war it served as a military hospital for wounded soldiers.
The Bridge Inn
The Bridge Inn is named after Victoria Bridge, built to span a tidal creek that ran across the line of Bolton Road: thew bridge thus linked Bolton Road to the New Chester Road (the creek eventually filled in and the bridge buried).
The Bridge Inn was opened as a hotel in 1900, but traded initially on wholly temperence lines, which meant no alcohol. This state of affairs continued until a referendum was held amongst the villagers in 1903: they voted 4:1 in favour of a drinks license for the building.
Nice one Rude
The war memorial is stunning. I never knew it had sculptures like that on it.
