What a load of shite. I've just been on a ConocoPhillips gas platform and they wouldn't give me a computer log on to even get Internet access and some villain Grrr gets it in prison. I hope they all get dry bummed in the showers!

Before you go off the deep end, prisoners are NOT getting computers, neither are they getting access to email/internet.

People can send an email to a prisoner at a cost of 30p per email, under this scheme you sign up for it,load your account, give the prison number and prison that the prisoner is in and the email is printed out at the prison (one computer, one printer, in one office) it is then put in an envelope and delivered to the prisoners cell with normal mail.

Some people can't get out to a post box, they might feel more comfortable typing and sending and it's cheaper than a stamp.

The prison staff don't go running around the jail dropping off emails, it's once a day with the normal mail run, and prisoners can't reply by email they have to write back in the normal way.

Surely this is a way for people to keep in touch, yes ther are those in jail that everyone thinks should be left there to rot, but there are also people inside for "petty" offence like none payment of fines for not having a TV licence and the like, or those accused but not yet gone to trial.

it sounds like a great idea and unfortunately there are young kids in our jails who may benefit from extra contact from their family, an email received every day may stop one of these kids hanging themselves in prison, not everyone who goes to prison stays bad once they are out, some people learn from it

It works on a score and how long the prisoners been in there.

Xboxes are not allowed, only Playstation 2 machines which have to be brand new and sealed, same with the games.
Xboxs not allowed due to Ethernet capability.

Tv in cell has to be payed for, you don't work you don't get a tv, £1 per week each prisoner.

You get a single payment when you get out, then your on your own, you go in with no job, your fooked when you get out and are more likely to end up back in. Most people piss the handout up the wall when released, most end up back in, most prefer to be in the can because they have nowhere else, no money, food, clean clothes or maybe just to have some release from an alcohol addiction.

Do I think this e-mail is a good thing?

Yes, let's not forget that not all prisoners are ... lowlifes, there are some in there who need help.

Let's not forget the family's of the prisoners too as its not just the prisoners serving the sentence it's the family as well.

whilst i understand your comments, i do feel luxuries should not be allowed prison is supposed to be a punishment, not a holiday canmp, prisions in other countries are very different,,maybe it would be more of a deterrent,if it was harsher in our prisions.
prisioners should not be paid wages, as they are getting free board and food etc so wages should go back to taxpayers kitty.
you do not go to prision for nothing, whether it is petty or not an offence has been committed, our prisons are overflowing as people know they will have it cushy, why get life when you only do half of maybe 10yr stretch, is that justice?

I totally agree with you on that, I was rather confused by the fact of televisions, radios, games consoles being allowed so I looked into it.
The reason for these items is to help keep order within prisons, they are used not only as a relaxation tool to relieve tentions rising but also as a bargaining tool.
However gaming consoles can have a downfall as these can lead to violence, harassment, theft, payment for drugs. Definitely a bad idea.

As for work, most people in the prisons don't have any form of employment, working within the prison try's to make them understand/learn a concept of how working life works. Try's to get them on the right track so to speak.
Their wages are used so they a: pay their tv, B: pay towards keep and c: for their own toiletries, shower gel, toothpaste etc. tabbacco, salt, etc all the little things we take for granted they have to buy, they do not see salt unless they buy it.
However, a lot of wages also gets used for drugs so something needs to be done about an available limit to each and every prisoner.
Even newspapers have to be paid for, a weekly subscription which is taken from their allowance.
Nothing is free, if they don't work they get thrown on the bottom where it's damp, cold and full of cockroaches with no tv, they only get out for an hour a day. They get no toiletries (apart from razors) they get nowt (unless family or friends send cash in).

Sentencing is one thing I have never understood either, i have bever looked into it, would someone care to explain?

yes i can see the reasoning both ways, but treats should be a no-no,someone i know was at wymott prision, they were only locked up around 9ish, they worked in the gardens, they were allowed mags and papers and family could pay for them, they have gym, pool tv and company,no pressure for bills ,laundry and food done for you ,by other prisioners, also near the end of there sentence they go out into community for work, on release they have support hostels and allowance, it dont seem like a detterrent or punishment, why should they supply tioletries, other than razors, many people on the outside working cannot afford these luxories, check out the jails in turkey, china and the likes (pure hell on earth).
