Hi
Does anyone have trade directories for Wallasey for 1st world war period? My gt gt grandfather Leonard Burton had a butchers/poultry dealer during this period in Wallasey maybe liacard area during this period. I wanted to know where exactly it was. After 1919 he became a tyler for various masonic lodges in Liverpool
Any help would be appreciated.

The reference library at Earlston has copies of many of the directories. Not sure if they cover the war years though, they may not have done them then.

Some directories are also available free on-line...

Think these go up to 1910.

You might find some here...Historical directories

The above link is for North West England you can search anywhere in the UK, you can view them online or download them.

Beware there big files eg, Kelly's Directory of Cheshire 1896 is 130 Mb

Enjoy....

Thanks for the replies everyone. Had a trip up to central library to look at trade directories for the 1914-19 period. I found a one Leonard Burton a corn merchant at 142 Wallasey Road so it must be him. In his obituary it said that he was a poultry dealer/butcher in Wallasey before leaving to live in Liverpool in 1919. Now all I need is to find any pictures of 142 Wallasey road during that period to see what it looked like. Any suggestions much appreciated.
Would a corn merchant deal with poultry in any way?

In 1911, the property was a private house, it may have been changed to a business premises by the time Leonard was there, just keep in mind it may have been where he lived and not his shop etc. Of course it could have been dual purpose.

Thanks Bert. I will put on his obituary after. It said after he left for Liverpool in 1919 he had previously worked as poultry dealer in liscard. Do you have access to 1911 census returns Burt? I need to confirm where he was in 1911. In 1901 he was a stable foreman for the omnibus tram company living in palm grove stables. My ancestry subscription ran out so couldn't check 1911 census.

If Leonard was born 1855 Sedberg, in 1911 he was living at 64 Urmson Rd, Wallasey and was a Motorman, Tramways.

...just off Liscard Village, by The Queens pub.

Perhaps the link with corn and poultry is simply down to corn being used for chicken feed?

142 Wallasey Road ( where Hearts Gym is now) was listed as a poultry shop in 1921 owned by a Edward Williams maybe your man had something to do with it.
