So my girlfriend broke her laptop screen and because i obviously have more money than sense i paid £90 for a replacement from ebay and figured i'd give it a shot of repairing it myself because i repaired mine myself and it wasnt too difficult.

Anyway new screen came today and i plugged i in as you do and all it dit was switch through black, white, red, green and blue. No display... took it out and put it back in a few times and nothing. But now theres nothing on the screen when i plug it in, have i knackered the cable? Is the new screen wrong?

I should add: everything works perfectly fine through hdmi into the telly and that between the screen flashing pretty colours and then it not working i could smell very faint electrical burn. Gonna get a t5 tomorrow and open the thing up amd see whats going on but wondered if anyone can diagnose from just what ice said here? Laptop is Asus UX303L running W10

Was the ribbon connected ?
As you will have power and feed, it seems to be doing a self test, with power only supply.

Ribbon can be a flat looking cable.

is this video any good.

A few ideas (not in any particular order) ....

Try connecting it to HDMI then hit WINkey-P and select PC screen only?

Or if there are other ASUS hotkeys for switch screens try that.

Go into the bios and reset to factory.

Remove battery an press on holding power button for 1 minute then connect adapter to it followed by pressing power button. Now make a shutdown ,connect battery and adapter.

tried that, it's fn+F8 and it won't let me change the output display from HDMI, it just doesn't register

sounds complicated... it won't permanently damage anything will it? the laptop has got programs (apps) and an upgrade from W8 to W10

the obvious one, well it would be if the battery wasn't BUILT IN!!!!! no way of doing this without opening it all up and undoing loads of wires and stuff...

Reset the bios.
It will also have a safe option.

The bios is safe to reset, it does not effect software options only hardware.

Can you put the old screen in and see if its behaviour is similar to the exchange, sorry ive not read how broke it was before the change.

Have you contacted the seller with whats happening and have they offered advice, as it could be a faulty screen.

You wont get any help from them as you have breached your warranty by doing what you have done.

In the BIOS
look for Display Type, and it may have resolution you can mess with.

But you would normally find that resting to factory defaults will give it its best chance.
Once you select reset to factory defaults. your MUST REBOOT as when it restarts it loads the NEW BIOS Settings.

Your best bet is google searches to pin point the problem.

The white ribbon is in the right way yeah ??
Only asking as they can sometimes go in either way as there more like a slot ribbon than a pug in ribbon.

I will send you a pm with my number and you can give me a call and i can try and explain better with you.

Yep thats what it was doing. Now no longer. Just did a bios reset and thats been unproductive (if thats even a word) and so nothing on the screen now. I'm heading to liverpool now for shopping but will give you a call or text later mark when i get back. The old screen is back in it which has a few cracks but should still show a picture right?

Just a thought...and only because my daughters Asus did the same thing...screen was black showed nothing but HDMI connection worked fine..ended up buying a new screen only to find original was OK it was the back light which had failed!..may not be the case with yours but best to rule it out as a possibility... Good luck!

When the backlight goes, you can see the faintest silhouette of what's going on.
Form the description given, there is a cycling of colours which implies no input (To the Display Not a power) and its performing a self test.
After that the BIOS was reset to factory defaults. (Now blank screen).

With resetting the Bios, you need to go in and check the Display Settings in the Bios.
As these can default to high or two low.
There is also sometimes a second option of source of input (My hunch) ive forgot what it will say exactly but it's an option between VGA mode and maybe 1 or 2 others. (I'm going back a few years now). I've looked on google but cant find an image to show you.

If the BIOS reset produces a blank screen.
Look at the BIOS options as you should have a Safe Setting also. This is not the same as Factory Defaults and now may work.
You must alway "SAVE" the new selection before rebooting and only then do the new BIOS settings take hold.
