Massive demand for Nintendo's Wii games machine and soaring sales of its DS console have brought record profits for the Japanese firm.
Its net profits grew 77.2% to 174.3bn yen (£731m; $1.4bn) in the year to 31 March, while sales surged 90%.
Nintendo had been struggling against rivals Sony and Microsoft until its new innovations revitalised its business.
It said it sold 23.56 million handheld DS consoles, and was hoping to sell a similar number this year.
The Kyoto-based firm added it aimed to sell 14 million Wii consoles in 2007/8, up from 5.84 million in the year to March.
14 million Wii consoles by next March/April??? Microsoft are still struggling to break the 10 million barrier (in actual sales, not distibution) and have been for some 18 months nearly and Sony have so far only managed to get 3.3 million into the shops, never mind into peoples homes, and again, the shops are well in stock, which means consoles are not selling out. The Wii is the only console that sells out as soon as its in stock, and Nintendo are deffo winning the seventh generation at the moment, in fact its fair to say they are running away with it as things presently stand.
And their DS is also slaughtering the PSP in the handheld market, with at least double the sales!
Maybe sooner or later Sony will wake up and realise games are about fun, not fancy and expensive hardware with fancy abbreviations like HD RSX CBEA and the like???
Its great to see the underdog killing both the rich kids and the previous market dominator.
Nintendo are back where they belong, and Sega are there with them (Mario and Sonic in the same game wow), just a pity its not Sega who are rivalling them in the consoles industry hehe.
