Had enough of trying to work around the strangeness of various Windows OS, seriously thinking of making the change to Apple.

Equal mix of graphic and office tasks across the system

We run Adobe suite on two desktops and two laptops, they all talk to a NAS drive on a network anyone made the change, any advice?

Roll back to Windows 7

Or maybe wait a bit longer and see what windows 10 has to offer.

Windows 8 killed everyone's fun.

Dont quote me, but I don't think you can just Apple OS on just any pc.
There may be a compatibility app to try.

Hopefully "The Computer Lab" user, will pick up on this, as he is well verus with Both Operating Systems.

So if its a case of new hardware as in laptops etc, your transition may need a rethink.

I'm not sure if i understood your question. Are you asking about an apple device or installation of OSX onto a pc? If its the latter I'm fairly certain it depends on the motherboard as during the installation process the OSX looks for a data string from the motherboard and if it doesn't find it then the installation will not proceed. There may be a work around but I don't know of one. Hopefully someone else may have better news.

Cheers Mark,

Always rely on you for good advice, (and great service), probably wasnt clear, think we are going the new hardware route, one graphic (imac) one admin (Mini) one laptop (macbook).

Someone's already interested in buying the Dell XPS's and the laptops as they are all good spec and not that old.

If I can stop wasting time on Windows 8 reckon they'll pay for themselves,

K

Hi,

It's an age old question, which is the best...? I suppose the answer is, which ever works for you.

Not every piece of software that you may know and love on a PC is available on a Mac, there are however equivalent packages, you just have to find them.

The transition is difficult I find but that's because of my job and the type of software I use.i always end up back on a windows machine sadly.

Technically speaking, in my opinion OSX is outstanding, much better than windows. It's a Unix / Linux based OS it addresses system resources such as cpu and ram much more efficiently. This means that the hardware spec doesn't need to be cutting edge to achieve simple goals.

There are not very many viruses out there for Mac, you really need to look hard to find one! This means you don't need expensive third party products. I find OSX is truly an all in one solution, you don't really need any third party software with the exception maybe of office for MAC.

If you have an iPad or iPhone, the collaboration between devices is seamless, one account for everything is all you need texts emails browser all linked, harmony!

Finally you will. Never ever pay for a OS. This is something that windows have finally given in to. Every upgrade in to the future is included in your initial purchase. I was recently running a 2007 iMac, on lion no problems. You buy now, it lasts you for around 7 years no worries, maybe longer.

After all this your probably thinking this guy must have a Mac, nope! I'm a windows man! (Why...)

ps in the short term if your struggling with windows 8, take a look at windows shell. This is a utility which gives you a classic windows 7 start menu.removes the metro screen completely. http://www.classicshell.net

Thanks ComputerLab,

Not an easy decision, we are a growing business and theres a point where it becomes too difficult to swap, both from an investment and a downtime/training perspective.

Installed the shell on my Windows 8.1 laptop works lovely, will try it on the other machines and see were we find issues, a great start though as its considerably less painful than the £3k minimum it will cost to change.

The only one i'd rethink is the mac mini as apple have started soldering ram in the new ones, so upgrade ram is a no no. If you need lot's of ram you need to pay apple prices "which are silly".

After having one Mac and one PC in work I much prefer the PC. The Mac seems more complicated to use than the PC, much prefer Windows.

If you're not liking Windows 8, then you're not alone.

I can also strongly recommend Classic Shell, or any of the others which are around.

I have a mac mini as a media player and macbook pro for main pc. I only use windows in work now. OSX has some quirky subtle changes that you need to get used to but for stability, battery life, ease of use, osx rules the day.

A 5 year old mac runs as well as a brand new windows 8 machine.

I guess it all depends on the business and what software is used.

"Adobe suite" is mentioned in the first message, so I guess the cost of four more licences would need to be factored into the cost.

One more point, if you are a "techy" you could have a go at building a hackintosh, this will give you the chance to try OS X for a few weeks.
Have a look at www.hackintosh.com and http://www.tonymacx86.com
