Wirral motorbikers urged to keep their vehicles secure

MOTORBIKE and scooter owners across Wirral are being warned about keeping their vehicles secure following a spate of thefts.

The motorcycle crime prevention campaign has been developed by Wirral council in partnership with Merseyside Police and will target particular hotspots for motorcycle crime.

It follows a number of thefts of motor scooters and motor bikes across Wirral over the last four weeks.

In the majority of cases, the offenders have simply pushed the scooter or bike off the front driveway or from the rear yard while it has been dark.

A number of the vehicles have been recovered near to where they had been taken.

Keith Winstanley, a Merseyside Police crime reduction officer working within the Community Safety Team, said: "I would advise owners to fit or engage a steering lock and also use a strong steel cable with a good padlock to attach the bike/scooter to a security rail or ground anchors.

"A combined alarm / immobiliser can be professionally fitted or other products that have been tested by Thatcham or Sold Secure.

"Motor cycle and scooter owners are also advised to use a garage where possible, or cover the vehicle when it's not in use."

Cllr Chris Blakeley, Wirral council’s cabinet member for housing and community safety, added: "People's motorcycles are not just there to be a nice bit of kit sitting on the drive. They are often a lifeline for people to get to and from work at times of the day, or in locations, with limited public transport.

"Bike theft is as serious as any other crime and we will work closely with the police to catch those responsible."
