Kate Mott murder: Police charge husband with murder after wife's body was found near Southport

DETECTIVES today charged a husband with murdering his wife whose body was discovered behind the wheel of a crashed car.

The body of nurse Kate Mott, 35, from Southport, Merseyside, was found in the driver’s seat of a blue Ford Focus on the edge of a nature reserve in Scarisbrick, Lancs, shortly after 8am last Thursday.

The car was in a field about 100ft from the road.

The victim had been strangled.

Today, Merseyside Police said Brent Mott, who is also a nurse, had been charged with the mother-of-two’s murder.

Mott, 31, of Everard Road, Southport will appear in North Sefton Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.

25 January 2010:

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a nurse from Southport have been given more time to question a 31-year-old man.

Kate Mott, 35, was discovered in a blue Ford Focus on Pool Hey Lane in Scarisbrick last Thursday.

It was initially believed she had died in a car crash but police launched a murder investigation when a post mortem examination revealed she had been strangled.

Officers arrested a 31-year-old, understood to be her husband, Brent Mott, from Southport on suspicion of murder the same day.

Police had previously already been granted an extension to continue questioning the man on Saturday.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “Detectives have now been granted another extension in time to continue to question a 31-year-old man who has been in custody following the death of 35-year-old Kate Mott from Southport.”

Officers have also been appealing for more information about the case.
Detective Inspector Dave Keegan said: “I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or recovered a carpeted boot lining from a Ford Focus or a checked green blanket.

“Also we are still appealing for anyone who may have seen the blue Ford Focus, registration number KC05 FVG, in the 24 hours before its discovery or who has seen anything suspicious to come forward to speak to us.”

The mum-of-two, who worked at Southport hospital, was described as a “lovely woman” by shocked neighbours.

Jonathan Parry, chief executive of Southport hospital, said: “I am sure I speak for the whole trust when I say our thoughts are with Kate’s family at this enormously difficult time.”

Lancashire Police were originally called to the scene but have now passed the investigation to officers in Merseyside

Anyone with information can call Copy Lane CID on 0151 777 3165 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
