A WIRRAL man died from a brain haemorrhage after falling on ice and banging his head on his garden wall, an inquest heard.

Brian Douglas, aged 70, was pronounced dead in the accident and emergency department of Arrowe Park Hospital hours after the fall at his home in Waterpark Road, Prenton on Tuesday, January 5.

Although the fall was unwitnessed, it is believed he had slipped on the ice.

Coroner’s officer Donald Johnston told the inquest at Wallasey Town Hall this afternoon that Mr Douglas, a retired environmental officer, had been in the garden when he fell and struck his head on the garden wall.

He complained of feeling unwell and went to bed. He awoke later that afternoon, still unwell and was taken to hospital where he died that evening.

A CT scan showed that Mr Douglas, who had a history of heart problems, had suffered a large subdural haemorrage. As a result of the scan's findings, no postmortem was conducted.

Recording a narrative verdict, coroner Christopher Johnson said: “The deceased died as the result of a subdural haematoma consistent with a fall.”

A narrative verdict is one in which the coroner simply records the circumstances surrounding the death.

Wirral pensioner died after fall on ice

A WIRRAL man died from a brain haemorrhage after falling on ice and banging his head on his garden wall, an inquest has heard.

Brian Young, aged 70, was pronounced dead in the accident and emergency department of Arrowe Park Hospital hours after the fall at his home in Prenton on Tuesday, January 5.

Although the fall was unwitnessed, it is believed he had slipped on the ice.

Coroner’s officer Donald Johnston told the inquest at Wallasey Town Hall this afternoon that Mr Young, a retired environmental officer, had been in the garden when he fell and struck his head on the garden wall.

He complained of feeling unwell and went to bed. He awoke later that afternoon, still unwell and was taken to hospital where he died that evening.

A CT scan showed that Mr Young, who had a history of heart problems, had suffered a large subdural haemorrage. As a result of the scan's findings, no postmortem was conducted.

Recording a narrative verdict, coroner Christopher Johnson said: "The deceased died as the result of a subdural haematoma consistent with a fall."

A narrative verdict is one in which the coroner simply records the circumstances surrounding the death.
