Hamilton Square ‘at risk’ according to English Heritage

HAMILTON SQUARE faces an ‘uncertain future’ according to the latest report by to English Heritage.

The square is one of more than 150 conservation areas earmarked as “at risk” in the North West following a survey by the foundation.

English Heritage says its research suggests the largest Grade I Listed Victorian Square outside of London is underused and the recent closure of Wirral Museum in Birkenhead Town Hall has contributed to this verdict.

Rock Park in Rock Ferry has also been included in the same category.

Cllr Jerry Williams, the borough’s “heritage champion” says local support is strong and public interest groups and Wirral Council have been working together over the last few years to combat the decline.

He said: “Wirral has embraced the conservation strategy very well and there are over 40 local historic societies working in partnership with the council to promote them.

“From a heritage point of view, Wirral is firing on all cylinders, and Hamilton Square is of massive importance, so we are watching this situation very carefully. There are a number of initiatives planned by heritage groups to revive the area, like history trails.”

Just over half of the North West’s local authorities (53%) completed questionnaires on their conservation areas – places designated to protect their special character and appearance – to give a full picture of the state they are in.

English Heritage says the aim of the survey is to get residents, local groups and councils working together to improve the areas before it is too late.

Dr Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, said: “Our research shows that conservation areas do not need time-consuming or costly measures, just prioritising as places people cherish, the commitment of the whole council and good management by residents and councils alike.

“Well-cared for, they encourage good neighbourliness, give a boost to the local economy and will continue to be a source of national pride and joy for generations to come.”

The wirral has an uncertain future... Councilors robbing us dry £96.00 a month and they cant even clean the streets properly cant fine people for allowing dogs to shit everywhere cant keep librarys open because they lost money in icelands bank (but wake up call you'll get it back slowly) cant keep things open they have to close things cant keep an edwardian square open cause its land they might want to use for hi tech buildings which will let them rake in the money in tax cant keep pubs open because they keep setting them alight cant keep wirral how it used to be they just want to make them selves rich... Who carea about the general public.. So wirral bloody council whats your next move ? HIGHER taxes for nothing or do we have to come in force to Wallasey Town Hall and tell you to get the fu** out cause you cant run jack shit ?
