The 20-year-old, who was ruled out for the season with a knee injury, was confronted by Cheshire Police while window shopping in Knutsford.

Officers leapt from a car, surrounded the Nigerian international and handcuffed his friend.

Police were called to the jeweller’s in the Cheshire town at about 2.45pm.

It followed reports the pair “appeared to be acting suspiciously” on CCTV in King St.

Shocked eye-witnesses said the shaken star was then quizzed in front of afternoon shoppers.

Anichebe, who is still on crutches following a bad tackle by Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan last month, protested his innocence.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “We have been responding to a series of violent robberies targeting jewellers in Knutsford for some time.

“We have robust plans in place to respond swiftly to any report of any suspicious activity at jewellers’ premises.

“One of the males initially did not comply with the officers’ requests and was handcuffed. Both were subsequently spoken to by police and no further action was required.”

Everton said Anichebe, who picked up the club’s young player of the year award last term, was left “distressed” by the incident.

The club said: “We would now expect him to receive a full and unreserved apology from the police — and both he and the club would then consider the matter closed.”

Former academy player Anichebe made 20 appearances for Everton this season and scored one goal.
