Saving the lake

THE campaign to repair a boating lake in Hoylake continues next week with a public meeting in the town.

Situated next to the new Lifeboat Station on North Parade, the lake has fallen into a serious state of disrepair over the years.

A community meeting to find ways of raising the funds needed for repair will be held at Melrose Hall in Melrose Avenue this Tuesday, July 21, starting at 7.30pm.

Among the campigners is John Curry, operations manager at Hoylake Lifeboat Station. He has told the Globe: "We want as many people as possible at Melrose Hall and help continue the momentum for this campaign. It's going to cost about £18,000 to repair.

"There are 52 joints in the lake which leak and they have got to be repaired, which is where the bulk of the expense is.

"The spark for the repair of the boating lake was ignited when the new lifeboat station was built last year.

"The lake is there, it just needs to be repaired. It would be horrendous to throw away this facility for children.

"They haven’t had it for a while, in fact I think it's about 10 years since it was actually used, so let's have it back again.

"The MP Stephen Hesford is supportive of this campaign. On the day the new lifeboat station was opened, I took him over to the lake and he agreed that it should be saved. Even the council is on our side about this.

Hoylake Conservative councillor Gerry Ellis said: "It's in the interests of the people of Hoylake to get the lake back and we need as much local support for this campaign as possible."
