So near yet so far for superb Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere Rovers have failed to take the last League One play-off place after an agonising draw against Scunthorpe.

Tranmere's 1,600 away fans were celebrating prematurely with Rovers leading the crucial game by one goal for much of the match thanks to a Craig Curran strike on 30 minutes.

Rovers were playing with superb and confident touch and the game seemed in the bag when on 88 minutes, a long throw landed in front of Rovers' goal and was converted by Scunthorpe United skipper Cliff Byrne.

The match ended one apiece, which was enough to secure the jubilant home side the final play-off place and more than enough to break Rovers fans' hearts.
