‘Too high’ speed bumps in Moreton road are ripped up

SPEED bumps in Moreton are being ripped up and replaced – because they are too high.

The traffic calming measures were installed in the Berrylands Road area earlier this year at a cost of £64,000.

Contractors installed 24 “round-topped humps” earlier this year along Harvest Lane, Flaxhill, Lingham Lane, Berrylands Road, Glasier Road and Bradman Road. A 20mph speed limit was also imposed.

A public notice announcing the scheme said the humps and cushions would have a nominal height of 75mm.

But the News understands 12 of the speed bumps were either too high, too low – or even the wrong shape.

Moreton councillor Chris Blakeley said he was appalled and called for the council to apologise.

One resident of Harvest Lane told the News: “I thought it was strange when I had a knock on my door on Wednesday morning asking for my car to be moved.

“I just assumed that it was the people resurfacing the roads, which I had a letter about.

“But no, they are ripping the new speed bump out which is in front of my house.

“I was told they are replacing all the bumps – what a joke and a waste of money.”

Wirral Council said the cost of replacing the speed bumps would be covered by the contractor appointed to carry out the original job.

But Cllr Blakeley said: “I’m appalled that the council has got this wrong.

“It might not be a cost to the council but it could be a cost to people in terms of damage to their vehicles if some are too high.

“I just can’t understand how the council haven’t picked this up sooner on a scheme they designed.

“I think they owe the people of Moreton an apology.”

The Berrylands Road area was identified as suitable for a speed reduction scheme by Wirral Council last September, along with the Cross Lane area of Bebington.

Farmfield Drive in Bidston, Oteley Avenue in Bromborough, Eastham Village Road and Higher Bebington Road were put on a reserve list.

A spokesman for Wirral Council said: “The speed bumps are being replaced by the original contractor who installed them, at no cost to the council.”

Bottom of Woodsorrel Rd Claughton - I regularly hear people scrape their exhausts - I think when you go over the last bump at the bottom the air gets slightly thinner...

Has anyone "met" the speed bumps on the domestic disposal route around Bidston tip? Horrendous. With a vehicle alone you can cope but with a trailer it is awful. You only have to look at the amount of material ejected from trailers etc and lying on the roadway alongside the bumps and to watch the vehicles to realise there is no sensible minimum speed. I have tried driving the car ever so slow - speedo hardly registering - and yet the trailer still jumps.

Snod

i have met those bumps at the bidston tip and they are a waste of space. because if someone in front of you has a trailer full of rubbish chances are its gonna spill out and possibly over your car. if they remove those bumps and impose a speed limit then maybe it would work a lot smoother
