Man rescued after falling into River Dee

A MAN who fell into the River Dee in Chester could not get out after twisting his knee.

Emergency officials were called to the scene after people reported hearing shouts for help off Chester city centre.

Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue staff went to help the 61-year-old, from Chester, who was said to have fallen into the river at The Wharf, New Crane Street, at about 8pm on Wednesday.

Cheshire Constabulary spokesman Shelley Williams said: "The police responded to a call after some people said they heard someone repeatedly calling out for help from down by the river.

"Police and fire attended the incident. It would appear that a man twisted his knee and then fell into the river. He was taken to the Countess of Chester for his injuries."

Fire service spokesman Wayne Clarke added: "On arrival firefighters discovered that a male had slipped over and fell down the embankment landing at the water side.

"Fire service personnel assisted in lifting the male casualty who had twisted his knee to safety. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance service personnel."

North West Ambulance Service spokesman Leslie Broadhurst said: "He had a knee injury and he was taken to the Countess."
