Anyone had experience yet of buying a used car privately and getting it taxed and insured to drive away legally under the new rules.
Viewing one tomorrow but will have to go back Saturday to drive it home if I want it

Yes its a pain in the ass!! If u want to test drive, as long as your covered to drive any car with your insurer 3rd party only, with the owner consent and it already has insurance on it and tax fine! If no insurance or tax you can not move it from the sorn position without taxing or insuring first! As far as I am aware may be wrong.

When it had the old tax disc -if it was still in date you could drive it home providing you had insurance. Now I think the moment the car changes ownership the tax on it is not valid for the new owner so you have to try and tax it online after you have bought it. May just take a risk bringing it home because I presume any ANPR cameras will still have it registered with the previous owner. Likewise I suppose with the insurance I could ask the owner not to cancel theres till ive got it back home.

From October 1, when you buy a vehicle the tax will no longer be transferred along with it, meaning you’ll need to get new vehicle tax before you can use it.
You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (VC5/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by phone – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – or via your local Post Office branch during its normal opening hours.

If its a private sale and the current owner still has valid tax on it then you can claim you're test driving it (conveniently back to your own house!), assuming you have valid insurance.

But as soon as the change of ownership kicks in, the tax expires and refund goes back to the former keeper. I'm not sure how quickly, technically it would be when you both signed the V5, but as its not in the DVLA system I don't see how it can be checked before the docs reach them.

If its a trade sale I don't think there's any reason why the dealer couldn't loan you their trade plate (assuming they have one) to get it home.

I'm in the same boat, looking for a second car that won't be used until the new year, but need it taxed to get it back to the driveway.

Think ive managed to sort it. The seller has said she will not return her part of the V5 and also not cancel her insurance till ive got it home--which is all you need

If the vehicle is within reasonable distance then you could maybe ask the seller to deliver.
This is something I've done in the past and also had done for me.

If it's still taxed, just drive it home. It won't be SORN'ed as soon as you drive it as the seller has to send off the V5 and be processed.
Just tax it when you get home.
The DVLA hasn't thought this one through properly, there's loads of problems with (ie you can't tax a car if the V5 gets lost, you can only tax it online on a weekend/sunday/at night, etc, any refund will go back to seller if you sell within a couple of weeks (common in trade or with many people (me))).

Oh well splashed out and got the missus a "new" car. Only problem is cant get taxed online. The online website recognises the reg and says its no longer taxed and tells me MOT is ok but when I try and type in the 12 digit number from the new keepers strip it doesn't recognise it. I presume this is because the DVLA have not processed the new Registration Document. seems a pants system

I know its a suck eggs comment but is it the correct 12 digit number your entering ?

There is a video on this page and alternative ways of doing it.
And the correct information about the changes.

Yep there is only one 12 digit number on the V5C/2. Will try and speak to a human there on Monday when they open again.

The definitive answer from the DVLA.
You can only use the V5C/2 new keepers details to tax your vehicle BEFORE the previous keeper has sent log book in to the DVLA and it produces a new Log Book V5 in your name.

The 12 digit number on the V5C/2 was cancelled when a new log book was produced in my name (which is still in post)

DVLA did say I could tax it at post office with just the V5C/2 and valid MOT document (mines been lost) (just in case the Post Office computers are down and they cannot check MOT status)
